[Show spoiler] 9/07/18: -The Nun * (2018): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The latest entry in the “Conjuringverse” skips back to 1952, where a malevolent spirit named Valek has infested the grounds of a Romanian monastery, bringing the interest of a priest (Damien Bichir) and a young novitiate nun (Taissa Farmiga, kid sister of Vera “Lorraine Warren” Farmiga) to investigate the supposed suicide of a young nun discovered by a groundskeeper (Jonas Blouquet) from a nearby, highly superstitious village. Once there, they find their minds suffused with eerie visions and more corporeal threats. Not up to the heights of the two Conjuring films directed by James Wan (or even the unexpectedly good Annabelle prequel, Creation), but superior to the flat-footed Annabelle, The Nun certainly knows how to generate a palpable sense of dread, but it also trumps in some well-worn genre clichés, and some of Bloquet’s attempts at comic relief rankle a bit. Plus, there’s another attempt – like Creation – to weave this film’s events into the larger tapestry of the “franchise”, but this time it works a little more seamlessly. I’m sure the movie will make a mint, but the best films in this series to date have featured James Wan behind the camera, and I hope he returns for the third Conjuring that’s in the planning stages. |

Yes. I enjoyed The Conjuring films and while Annabelle was a lackluster effort, the second Annabelle film came through strong and looking to see where this Conjuring universe will go because it has the potential to be one of these "cinematic universes" that's actually worthwhile.

I didn't know about this version, but I just watched the trailer, and it definitely looks like an improvement over the Blumhouse version. I'm going to check it out soon.

An exceptional and terrifying thriller! Ray Liotta is scary as hell in this film. I was actually going to post that this needs a US blu ray release ASAP! I'm struggling on holding off on the German release but will probably crack on that soon. Would be a perfect Shout! release

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Holy Schiit!!! If you haven't seen this one, and know little to nothing about it, don't read anything about it and go watch it immediately. No spoilers here. Incredible slasher flick, right up there with the classics of the genre. I'm looking forward to the sequels. |

This actually looks watchable and much better than the Blumhouse one. Might add it to my list actually.

![]() ![]() 9/7 The Initiation (1984) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Horror can be intelligent and this is one such example, even if on the surface it might appear to just be a sorority slasher with some skin and light humor. Where it shines is in developing its characters, primarily the main girl, and exploring its themes. While I'd recommend anyone to watch it fans of Twin Peaks should really check it out. |

Halloween 6: The Curse of Micheal Myers (Producer's Cut) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This previously-rare cut of the 6th chapter in the franchise is surprisingly suspenseful and fun. That's not to say it lives up to Carpenter's original (can any of them do that?), but at least this cut of the film is a lighter but still solid Halloween film. It also helps that now the film is 'unburdened' from the main story line (the new upcoming sequel, Halloween (2018), retcons all previous sequels and reboots in the series), so it has a little more freedom in that it now pretty much exists its own alternate Halloween universe. Years after the events of Halloween 5, it is revealed that Jamie survived the explosion that supposedly killed her and Michael. She has been taken prisoner and it is shown she is pregnant and is giving birth inside a dark, sinister building. She manages to escape with her baby as Michael goes after her. Near Haddonfield, she stops and hides her baby before Michael catches up to her. The next day on Halloween, an older Tommy (one of the kids from the original) finds the baby. Now living across the house where things started, he warns Kara and her son that Michael will go after them since they live in his house. Dr. Loomis finds out about Jamie. As afternoon gives way to darkness and rebellious students prepare to celebrate Halloween, Dr. Loomis, Tommy, and Kara must prevent Michael from getting the baby and figure out why he wants him. The Producer's Cut of this entry in the 'alternate universe' of Halloween tries to revitalize the genre by introducing a more supernatural element into the story. While I found it to be kind of interesting and quite fun (not that you can actually take it too seriously), it is definitely not for everyone. While the film does a pretty good job at building tension and a nice Halloween atmosphere with its suburban setting, things do start getting weird in the first act and they just keep getting weirder as the film goes along. It is not an exaggeration saying that the ending is pretty bananas, and thus it is a take-it-or-leave-it element of the film. I found myself in the former side of this, knowing ahead of time the general direction of the story and with the mindset of just enjoying it without taking it too seriously. Thus personal taste and expectations will dictate how much one enjoys it given the somewhat drastic, and supernatural, direction of this chapter. I found it quite enjoyable especially since it now resides in a different storyline than the one that it is being currently advertised with the new sequel. If anything, it is worth watching at least once. It still manages to be suspenseful and very atmospheric while integrating that new element within the story. Whether it is better than the theatrical cut is a matter of taste. PQ: 4.5 / 5 Very solid transfer, especially considering how rare this cut of the film was before this blu-ray. The transfer is very filmic, with a nice layer of grain throughout. It is not handled as well as Sony's usual fare, but the fact that I'm comparing it to it is commendable. Shadow detail continually impresses, with excellent blacks levels that are pretty deep, as well as plenty of gradations within them that give the image a lot of depth for the whole duration of the film. Fine detail is good, nothing that will knock your socks off but still very good nonetheless. Colors look great most of the time with a few moments where they can look a bit faded, but nothing that ruins the presentation. AQ: 4 / 5 Good 5.1 mix. It is not of the aggressive variety but it does lend the film great support in building atmosphere and suspense. Dialogue is always clear and intelligible. The classic score comes through very well. Discrete effects are not abundant, but the surrounds are used often to expand the soundstage with atmospherics and music. Overall, a very solid mix but not one that will test the capabilities of your sound system. Last edited by samlop10; 09-17-2018 at 06:22 PM. |

I watched Truth or Dare (2017) tonight, and I thought it was a lot of fun. It has a considerably lower budget than the Blumhouse version, but I agree that this version is a much better movie. I really dug the haunted house approach, and I found it fairly suspenseful at times.
