There are definitely visual differences between all UHD players. But the X800 is a poor player, although I’m not surprised it still looked better than the LG. I know I can’t convince you to try the Xbox One X, but you should then try the Panny 820. Either will be an eye opening experience.

In any event, I asked about the 820 compared to my 900 for use with my JVC projector. The answer I wanted was that my 900 was equivalent. The actual answer is that the 820 has tone mapping which might improve upon the custom tone mapping that my calibration tech used. I'll simply live in denial. Forever! |

Just watched the included Blu-Ray if First Blood last night (I don’t own a 4K TV or player yet). I’ve got mixed feelings about this transfer. Clarity is definitely better than the original release. That one suffered from frozen grain and some shots looked smeared a bit. I’m a bit disappointed with the blacks and color timing on the new release though. Blacks are mostly a medium to dark gray on this one. Lowering my TV’s brightness setting helped a bit. I know this was never a very colorful film, but at times it felt like there was no color in the people’s skin. Just compare the scene where the cops are about to shave Rambo and you’ll see what I mean. The scene where John is talking to Trautman over the radio looks weird to me too.
Maybe some of it’s just from them converting the 4K transfer from HDR to SDR. I don’t really know much about that stuff yet, so I’m probably wrong. 😁 |

2) All I want is a player that puts out the disc image without messing with it. I don't need the Panny's tone-mapping tools or anything like that. The X800 does this with its "direct mode." 3) The LG is a backup, but in extensive testing it offers no perceivable difference in image quality on its "custom" setting with all tools off or at zero. That is why I made a special note of this unusual issue on this disc, in case others run into it. I plan to test it more tonight, it might have booted weird or something. 4) The Xbox One is widely regarded as a poor UHD player, and I trust those reports more than I trust you. Also it's $500 and I would never use the video game aspect of it. |

There’s no such thing as direct mode and players don’t just pass the info from the disc directly to the TV. This is not how it all works. There’s an enormous amount of processing happening no matter what settings you use. This is a fundamental lack of knowledge on how these things operate.
