Just finished watching the Living Daylights. I thought it was an awesome Bond movie. Timothy Dalton was a great Bond in this. I feel he’s really underrated, unfortunately, I guess because he only did two Bond pictures.
I think Living Daylights was probably better than any of the Moore movies, or at least Moore’s last 4 movies or so. Those just seemed to get worse and worse as they went on. Onto License to Kill! |

L2K is the only Dalton I really like, its brutal and a young Benicio DelToro is a standout. Still a bit cornier than modern Bond, the semi wheelies being particularly goofy.
I got it at the BF $general sale. Watching Diamonds are Forever on Prime to join in |

Licence to Kill is one of my top five films in the franchise.
![]() Peeps in the 80s slept on Timothy Dalton's dark and gritty turn as Bond, and now they're waking up and realising that he was actually great in the role. |

LTK is amazeballs. Every Bond villain should have a pet iguana with a sparkly diamond necklace.

Almost done watching Licence to Kill. I think Dalton once again did a great job portraying Bond. It seems, though, that the plotting of this movie was kinda all over the place. Living Daylights is definitely my favorite of his two films. I wish Dalton had stuck around to continue playing Bond... but I’m sure the 6 years between this movie and Goldeneye was probably too much for him to sit around and wait for them to get their act together.
Ready to start Goldeneye soon! I remember really liking it when I originally saw it. Although I still remember the annoying Russian computer hacker guy. Couldn’t stand him. |

First of all nobody screws with Boris Grishenko. I cannot count the number of times a year I recite his entire role verbatim. He is always my go to character in GE64 deathmatches to this day. There is nothing like slapping people to death shouting BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME SLUGHEAD.
Despite being crippled by the writer's strike and losing the series principal writer, a number of budget cuts, the move to Mexico rather late requiring more rewrites and being tied to a studio drowning financially which gave the film a lackluster half assed release with dreadful marketing in the huge year of 1989...LTK absolutely works and even though it was an experiment it still remains to me-in spite of my love for Brosnan's tenure-the last time that 007 truly mattered as a flesh and blood character on screen. It was the last film to be produced fully under Cubby Broccoli and it shows. The moment just after the climax when Dalton slumps against that rock is the single closest moment we will ever see to Fleming's novels. But I hold The Living Daylights not only as the better film, an absolute masterpiece-and the last 100% true masterpiece of the series but also the most underrated film ever made. I quote the original series daily and not a second goes by that isn't qued in my head by a moment from the 20 films. Everything after that never happened. The hardest question in life besides the inevitable "what is your favorite film?" is the question of favorite Bond which is an impossible question to answer since each of the five actors has individual strengths and most crucially plays the role differently in each film-particularly dependent on the inherent tone of that film. |

It's nice to see Dalton, and his two films, getting some love in this thread. I confessed a couple of days ago that in the late 80's I was kinda "meh" on Dalton as Bond (even though "meh" wasn't a saying yet!). I guess it just felt weird seeing someone other than Connery or Moore play the role at the time. But with repeated viewings, I came to realize that Dalton was in many ways the perfect Bond, with many of the characteristics of the literary Bond, while giving moviegoers the sophistication and charm that they expected from the cinematic Bond.
I think he had the misfortune of playing the role at a time when moviegoers were basically suffering from "Bond fatigue", with an amazing 16 films (17 if you counted NSNA) in just 27 years. In '89, Bond was being viewed as a bit of an out-of-touch dinosaur, and it took a 6-year hiatus, a great build-up of hype, and the casting of an actor with a greater appeal to the ladies, to reignite the series. That was Dalton's other "problem" at the time: he didn't really connect with the female half of the audience, to the extent that Connery, Moore, (and later) Brosnan did. I definitely wish he had gotten a chance to do a few more films, but the timing just wasn't right for him. Audiences needed a little bit of time away from Bond at that point, so that the love could be rekindled. Even though millions of movie fans and tons of box office receipts would disagree with me, for my money, Dalton was a far better Bond than Mr. Brosnan. |

I'll grant you that Tiffany Case isn't one of the best Bond girls, but Plenty O'Toole I very much like despite her brief appearance. She's a great throwaway character.

"Hi, I'm Plenty." "But of course you are." "Plenty O' Toole." "Named after your father, perhaps?" That exchange alone makes me cherish Natalie Wood's little sister, and though I find DAF is the least of the Connery Bonds (though it certainly has better pacing than the rather turgid THUNDERBALL), I've given over to its campy charms over the years. |

I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually enjoyed On Her Majesty's Secret Service - I realise George Lazenby wasn't a great Bond by any means, but I thought the film itself was decent enough - with the bonus of Telly Savalas as the villain too. ![]() Last edited by CV19; 12-10-2018 at 09:38 AM. |
