Watched the first episode dub last night. In general I'm ok with a recasting if its an improvement especially for older dubs.

It might be a decade since I last saw NGE and what I recall was that the original dub was very uneven. However, I remember thinking that Spike Spencer's emoting as Shinji worked for me and I liked Tiffany Grant as Asuka. I've seen the show both subbed and dubbed in the past and preferred the sub (I'm not a sub only person). So far the Netflix Shinji sounds fine voice wise, but man everyone sounds like a robot. Its too early for me to give it a pass/fail, but hopefully the cast will get better as they go along.

Then there's the translation. I've seen many people say that "translation is an art", and sure I can see that especially in regards to translating Japanese. Then I saw the

translation and I just cringed. What kind of art is that supposed to be, abstract expressionism?

Man I hope the whole show isn't full of that nonsense (I can't even escape into the subs, because I saw it there too).

I can't decide who I like more. I've liked Asuka since before I even began watching the show, but boy do I like Misato now too. 18 episodes in and Rei does nothing for me, maybe that'll change.

Whew, I finally made it through the first four episodes of the new dub last night. For some reason the show wasn't available to me on my Netflix on the 21st. Looked for it everywhere, did multiple searches for it, and couldn't find it. Anyhoo, I was expecting a jarring difference in voice acting from the new squad but it surprised the hell out of me when you could immediately tell that they were trying to emulate a similar pitch and tone to the original voice actors. I'm not blown away by the dub or anything, but I'm not far enough into the show yet either (haven't even heard Rei or Asuka speak yet). So far the new performances seem a little subdued and lacking in emotion and range. But its passable.

I already have the old work so its welcome to see something new for a change and it's nice to have it in HD on Netflix. It has been ages since I watched NGE and the traditional 90s drawing and the level of detail in the landscapes is truly astounding. During the first few minutes I was thinking "wow this looks really old, possibly even bad!" but then that feeling escaped me almost immediately and I became lost in all of the detail and completely immersed. I'm really going to enjoy watching the rest of the series over the next week or two.

It's Pride week here in Minneapolis. Several of my straight friends are downtown drinking, enjoying the festivities, and having a blast. You should consider moving somewhere more accepting. Why do the Eva units bleed like they're human? Was it explained what the Evas are and I missed it? I'm on episode 19, so maybe it's a spoiler and I'll find out later. It seems like the Eva and its pilot are one...maybe I'm way far off on this lol.

I believe they are online exclusives, think it says on the item page. I picked up one of the Yu Yu Hakusho shirts from them a month ago and love it. Such good quality and $20 is a fair price too.

You weren't kidding, it gets a lot better at episode 8. I watched through episode 11 and I'm liking it a lot more than the first 7 episodes.

I cant remember what year it was my brother bought the VHS', but I just remember really enjoying/laughing at episodes 8-9-10-11, so much so that I would rewatch those episodes.

I watched 2 episodes on Friday and 10 more yesterday. It's my first time watching it in almost, what, 17-18 years? I couldn't remember how long it would take to reach that episode and watching it again just made me smile at remembering why I like this show.
