So he only kept the one with Shinji on the cover and purple sides?
Actually, that's incorrect. The LDs for the 11th and 12th volumes (episodes 21' - 24') were of the "Director's Cut", which is why there was a long delay of 14 months between the 10th and 11th volumes.

The only releases that ever had the broadcast versions of 21-24 were the Genesis 0:X VHS/LD releases from 1999, the "Second Impact Box #2" DVD box from 2001, and the "Archives of Evangleion" DVD set from 2015.

Another thing to note is that the "OA" versions of 21-24 on the Renewal / Platinum releases were basically the remastered Director's Cuts with the extra scenes excised. As such, it doesn't reflect how those four episodes were initially broadcast.

I thought more people would complain about the fact that Dan Kanemitsu made the same mistake as Manga Entertainment's translator with Misato's line about Adam and Lilith in End of Evangelion. He translated 私達人間もね、アダムと同じリリスと呼ばれる、生命体の源から生まれた as 'like Adam, we humans also come from the source of life called Lilith", when the correct translation would be "we humans were born from a being called Lilith, who is a source of life just like Adam".

I err on the side of intentional, driven from the licensors in Japan.

If the creator himself is saying that he didn't intend for it to be gay, that's enough proof for me.

No one said everyone is the same. That doesn't "erase" anything and a work of fiction doesn't "erase" anything, much less the specific translation they used. You bring that on to yourself.

It does

That's fair. BTW there's parts of the world where being gay is technically illegal, whether or not you'd like to talk about that is a discussion for another day. The more I think about it, comparing this discourse to "brutal homophobia" is kinda insulting and diminishing of homophobia itself.

I personally grew up with none in my life till I moved 30-some minutes away and started a new school. (at the time I was living in Missouri) It was pretty jarring because through homophobia I learnt being gay even had a descriptor. What I went through is nothing comparable to people's interpretations of a cartoon, nor is it comparable to the dialogue "change" everyone is mad at. It's not even the same thing. Hey, that's opinions for you.

You're bringing identity politics into this yourself. That's not what Evangelion is about.

BTW not everyone is the same, as you said. Gay people aren't a hive mind collective. I don't appreciate that sort of inferrence toward me. lmao

Quote:
This isn't about name calling or some minor inconvenience making gay people uncomfortable so don't try and downplay it like "we all have problems" or "we're all the same can't we just get along". Take ownership of that bull.
No one's downplaying anything. You can bring what you want to the show and if the possibility it isn't what you think is a reality, that's on you.

Kaworu was clearly infatuated with Shinji, like a God observing a unique subject, how some people see that as sexually attracted is beyond me.

Problem with that is, there are plenty of sources that say the opposite, so I'm not sure where Sevakis got that info.

[Show spoiler]

Yeah Anno loves doing things like that, he'll say something one day then the total opposite the next. Honestly we'll never know what his true intentions were. Which is what I think he wants.

You have your own self agency. You're your own greatest enemy holding yourself back, not anybody else.
And yes, I did and still do have problems from fear of homophobia so think before you assume I've never dealt with anything before.

Also lmao "hets" please, show some empathy for people who aren't the same orientation as you

The only dub was also serviceable (if somewhat inconsistent).

I watched the old dub back in the day, now watching the new one. I don't feel like I am missing anything.

The new dub certainly is not bad. I can understand some folks preferring the old, but calling the new one bad is wrong.

For a bad dub witness the first release of A.I.C.O on Netflix. That was an awful dub. Note, that has since be debubbed, and is much better now.

Anno and Studio Khara wanted this, they wanted a new dub with an emphasis on the things they want. Don't kid yourself otherwise. This was not driven by Netflix revisionism, this is Anno (maybe with a small case of George Lucas disease).

The HD video is outstanding by the way. Looks beautiful on my big screen.
Hasn't been much of a reaction to the dub on this forum.

Go to your nearest suburban shopping centre and walk around holding hands with your male friend. Then leave the shopping centre walking around holding hands in the car park where security won’t come to your rescue. Then come back here and tell me how you felt and then let’s have this conversation again.

Are you afraid to do that?

This is not the place for that kind of discussion. It's gone past the subtext of the anime now. Drop it.

Things like Free!: Eternal Summer, Prison School, and Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid caused me to become very paranoid about newer dubs and with nearly all modern anime now, I watch them subbed-only. I generally watch most of my anime subbed, but I will watch many older shows dubbed.

Also I'll generally avoid Steven Foster dubs like the plague unless there's situations where it's the only version available for streaming. Why is Pani Poni Dash! still streaming dubbed-only after all this time FUNimation? You first streamed the Sojitz titles dubbed-only, then after your subscription service launched around 2011, you finally began offering the subbed versions too, except for Pani Poni Dash!. That dub pronounced "Tachibana" like "Takibana" Why you gotta make that happen Steven Foster?

BTW, the dub for Le Chevalier D'Eon is not bad from what I remember despite being a Steven Foster dub.
