[Show spoiler]He can meet back up on that bench if he eventually traveled back to his original timeline, as the characters had been doing throughout the movie. You're right he couldn't have just traveled back in time and then waited for the timeline to catch up to that moment.
They don't say how he got back. It's open to interpretation and possibly open for future storytelling. (I kind of hope it stays vague.)
