He's getting 2.0 lossless audio using the analog out jacks from the PS3. Unfortunately, that means he's receiving matrixed surround sound for the rear channels.

Unless you're listening in 2 channel stereo, you'd be better off using the digital optical cable for 5.1 DD/DTS lossy audio.
