I'd guess that 95% of home theater enthusiasts are unwittingly or otherwise willfully out to resist figuring out what it takes to set up proper surround sound for the their home theater. We all had to start somewhere. Most of us began with next to nothing. For me, it was TV audio. I did have a nice two channel stereo when I became interested in home theater (about a decade ago) that I've been upgrading off and on for over 20 years. That experience does matter, but it still baffles me how so many will strive so hard to go out of their way to never figure surround sound out.

I can't come up with any other solution than for those with legit set-ups to expose others to what the real deal actually is. Minds will be exploded so easily. Merely 15 minutes at my place with a challenging Nolan 5.1 will end any doubts.

I’ve actually worked with real professionals who did video calibration for a living and was never overly impressed with what I saw. Video calibration is as much art as it is science. You can have two TVs, both accurate, and both with a fundamentally different look.

There’s nothing shameful in what I said. This type of industry has a lot of fraud and usually prey on videophiles who are just starting out and don’t know better.

All modern TVs have presets that are very accurate. Manufacturers are not these idiots they are made to be around here. They know exactly what they’re doing and know how to make accurate and good looking TVs.

It really is an odd one. On SDR sources it's really hard to determine if low or medium is preferable. High will just smother the image in blacks.

But aye, HDR, high dynamic contrast is optimal to get true 4K HDR as I said.

EDIT: I suspect what the TV is doing in HDR is not fully using the Dynamic Contrast. But having it set on high allows the metadata to fully utilize the contrast of the screen. Having it off there for throttles the metadata. My totally non professional opinon. Let's see what the tec brains say here.
