That seems to be the consensus around here. It is rather fascinating, however, that he somehow manages to be the same level of annoying on nearly every subject discussed. It's almost caricature.

He's either next-level dedicated to trolling or he truly believes all of the crazy that he spouts out. Either way: Wow.

I'm at this point thinking he's a 70 + gentleman, or a troll.

I'm trying to access the service menu using the smartify LG remote app, but having no luck finding out what inputs to press. Anyone got any advice?

you'll need the pro version
choose infra-red option
press the blue wand button on left (center)
type in 0413 passcode
there's service menu.
then follow these instructions: https://www.avsforum.com/forum/40-ol...g-oled-tv.html

thanks a bunch LG engineers !!!!

Had a Pioneer 436SXE, terrific TV but it was awful for IR, absolutely awful. I babied it for the recommended 200 hours, kept it on very low settings after that and made sure to not watch anything with static logos for more than a few minutes (otherwise I'd be watching them for the next week), going to all sorts of contortions with the AR to crop out scoreboards or in-game displays or whatever (though it made gaming rather hit and miss, as you can imagine), but I'll be damned if I'm gonna crop 'scope movies to 16:9 just to fill the screen.

End result after a year or two of usage - my viewing habits actually being more varied then for content back then, the main TV being exclusively for movie watching nowadays - was the boundaries of the 2.35 letterbox borders etched into the screen. Subtle perhaps but still visible on full-field black images. Not doing all that bollocks just to have it burned in again, and I KNOW it's not plasma tech but seeing as I'll be mostly watching high-brightness high-contrast HDR imagery on it then that will put its own unique strain on this particular tech.

I owned a Panasonic ST30 and VT60 - now a Samsung F5300B (final Samsung plasma they made). All three had issues with IR despite babying these things like an infant in a crib getting fed a bottle every moment necessary. All guidelines followed and it happened on three different plasma panels. It wasn't just with scope movies, but just a very small amount of watching sports with a ticker.

I don't think I've ever seen a Plasma TV in my life. I'm surprised anyone bought one, judging by your similar experiences.

Nitroglycerin sounds less volatile.

I didn't baby my Samsung Plasma. At all. Didn't have IR issue either. Sorry to hear about those that did.

Haven't had a single issue with my OLED IR wise.

I need to get either the APP or the controller to disable the ASBL on my set.

I'm going to need to rewatch this soon. I don't think I've seen it since upgrading to my E8. I remember it being dark but I don't know how big of an issue it was.

Also, to chime in on a subject from a few pages ago, if ASBL is an issue for you on your 2017-2019 OLED (not sure if older models are affected) then I would highly recommend picking up a service remote and turning it off in the service menu. Here is a link to the one I bought recently: (). A few quick button presses, and voila, no more annoying dimming. I only ever seemed to have it on Dolby Vision content, but even that was enough to drive me crazy over time. If it's happening to anyone on regular HDR too, then for god's sake get the remote. Apparently there are ways to do it with a cell phone app but for me it was just easier to get the damn remote.

Oh, and OLED4LIFE, y'all.

It's what LG say, so I trust them.

Geoff, I'm curious: of all the different tellies you've owned in your time - CRTs, plasmas and LCDs - which one would you say is/was your second favorite? Assuming the ZD9 is your #1, that is.

On LG OLEDs, with dynamic contrast turned off, tons of detail gets lost in a way that is certainly not true to the original movie and likely not intended. I think it's the result of it being an early disc on the format, and while it does look great with dynamic contrast on, it definitely is way too dark with it off. Yes, these scenes were meant to be dark, but there was still meant to be an actual visible picture on the screen.
Was meaning to get back to this. Dynamic contrast needs to be set to high on LG OLEDs for HDR sources, in my opinon. Otherwise blacks will crush and, you'll lose a significant amount of image detail.

It really is an odd one. On SDR sources it's really hard to determine if low or medium is preferable. High will just smother the image in blacks.

But aye, HDR, high dynamic contrast is optimal to get true 4K HDR as I said.

EDIT: I suspect what the TV is doing in HDR is not fully using the Dynamic Contrast. But having it set on high allows the metadata to fully utilize the contrast of the screen. Having it off there for throttles the metadata. My totally non professional opinon. Let's see what the tec brains say here.

Word to ya mutha. It's exceedingly hard to argue Geoff's tech knowledge and expertise, but OLEDs are one subject where he and I have vehement denominational differences.
