You know why I don't moan whenever Arrow - who are 4K-phobic as Criterion - produce a 1080p disc of whatever movie? Because they at least know how to encode them properly and give these things the respect they deserve. Their RoboCop looks so incredibly good I found myself wondering what more a 4K disc could possibly bring to it, I hope to find out someday but if I don't then I'm good. But Criterion are like most of the big US indies, they put so much work into creating the product and then shit it out with compression that's hardly better than one-touch mediocrity, which always leaves a doubt in my mind as to what I'm seeing. Sometimes it works well enough, sometimes it doesn't and I wish they wouldn't leave it to chance.

Criterion, please, swallow your pride and hire Fidelity in Motion. 'Good enough' is not good enough for a label of your stature, you need the best.

4K or not this is going right into the Scorsese collection. I was hoping for a BD because I cancelled Netflix right after the trial.

I am sure if it is announced on 4k then we will get lots of posts (not from Geoff and the more knowledgeable types) about the price like Synapse have for their Suspiria disc!

Hell of it is though, it's not like Criterion have bargain basement prices as it is. They're already charging £26 a time for new releases in the UK, at least the more lavish packages anyway, that's more than what any new 4K disc retails for so if they were to bump it up to £30 for a 4K package then I'd happily pay that.

Did Netflix help to get this a physical release and if so why don't they push for more of there films for physical release like the Highway Men or Calibre for example.

I doubt that Netflix did any hardcore touting of this, it was probably Criterion who made the overtures (having already nabbed Roma) and so it's up to them to pick and choose what they want to release. Still, if they do become Netflix's informal disc releasing label then that will be A Good Thing despite my complaining. Makes me wonder if any other indies have given thought to hitting up Netflix to get some stuff out there on disc? We need Mindhunter on BD, stat!

Not gonna lie, reading through this thread has taught me we don’t deserve nice things at all or ever again and these things should remain on streaming services in perpetuity. But hey, I’m just super excited and happy to see Netflix movies are getting a physical release regardless of who puts them out. Makes me optimistic for other films like Sono’s Forest of Love.

As a side note, i'm hoping we'll get 'El Camino' on disc soon enough, since Sony's long been in charge of the Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul physical releases.

Their UK pricing is incomprehensible though

Have you actually tried contacting Criterion directly and voicing your concerns and requests about their encoding choices. Begging them to switch companies on a forum is completely useless and actually accomplishes nothing.

Maybe if people actually want things to change they should all contact the company directly, just a thought. They have been pretty responsive from my experience and others.

I'm ambivalent here, erring more on the side of "yeah, fair enough, at least it gets a release" given it's a Netflix movie. But in other instances Criterion are becoming pests tbh.
Yeah, they’re “pests” for giving Netflix movies that otherwise wouldn’t get released at all physical releases. Criterion didn’t “put a stop” to anything. There was otherwise no chance of this ever being released at all. Netflix doesn’t care at all about physical media. This is something that has even been confirmed by filmmakers that have worked with them(Mike Flanagan begged them to release blu-rays of his films). The only thing they’ve ever released themselves is Stranger Things as a target exclusive.

They can’t even bother to give their films proper theatrical releases, against the wishes of people like Martin Scorsese. The only reason this is getting a physical release is because Netflix gets to say their films are in the collection. Look at the way they’ve promoted these announcements on social media.

Yeah, Mulvaney is nothing but responsive. I’ve emailed him numerous times and he’s always gotten back to me.

Maybe it's not 4K because of the de-aging. Can't compute, 4K player bursts into flames..

I predict this will be 4K.
If its only on BD, the Netflix version will still be the best presentation because of the higher resolution and HDR.
Either way, i'm getting this Day 1

I have tried contacting Criterion about using other authoring houses for their compression, however the responses I’ve received are the same- “we feel they’re good enough, and we like them.” Combine that with Kline’s comments about other distributors’ releases of their films (which is actually full of misinformation and lies), and I’m doubtful they will change.

Lee Kline is a very knowledgeable guy who does great work in Criteiron’s restorations. I have no issue whatsoever with their restorations at all, and they are still the best in the business in regards to extras and film catalog- it’s just their compression isn’t perfect. I’ve mellowed down about it, since I’ve figured that they don’t want to change (which is totally fine- if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it).

I’ve come mainly to the conclusion that as long as you don’t judge the encodes on a frame-by-frame or screenshot level, they’re mostly solid. Perfect? Nope, but more than acceptable in motion. Plus, I sit far away from my TV, so it makes it harder to notice these issues anyways.

That said, I am still buying this, to support Netflix films on physical disc.

If this gets a 4K release great. If it doesn't, fine. We are lucky to be getting films on Blu-ray let alone 4K in a market where DVD still outsells the two superior formats. 4K looks fantastic, but so does 1080p. If this got a DVD only release, then I would say riot, but if it doesn't get a 4K we shouldn't riot. I just feel like almost every other comment on this forum has become "why no 4K?"
