Presumably a giant boxset would be a lot more likely now that Warners distributes MGM home video.

No way. The sequels suck, the remake sucks, I don't want to have to lay down $40 or more just to have access to a nice SE of the original.

It's been hard, but I'm really hoping we get a Poltergeist boxset in the near future. I was hoping SF would be the ones to do it though, but anything can happen.

How many Spielberg related movies have been licensed out to other studios? Can’t think of any

WB has released a new International 4K DCP. I would bet a UHD 2022 release to mark it's 40th anniversary.

https://www.parkcircus.com/film/115324-Poltergeist

EDIT: Whoops. I'm late to this party. See members already screened the new DCP. Awesome!

New upgrade I just completed of Poltergeist's original theatrical trailer. Enjoy.

Very good!

I get though why you had to use footage that wasn't in the original trailer.

If you're up for doing requests, maybe I can PM you about reconstructing the original Poltergeist II teaser? I know you're intention is to reconstruct trailers to high-quality widescreen glory, but since you're doing them...

Yep, good eye! There were exactly five replacement shots:
1. Opening establishing shot (a credit plays over the trailer shot in the film).
2. "Give Ken a kiss" shot (not in the finished film).
3. Shot of Steven making the duck noises (alternate take).
4. "That thing is in there with my baby" (not in the finished film).
5. "There are hundreds" (not in the finished film...this one was the trickiest to pull off, but it worked relatively well - it's the "so alone" shot of Dr. Lesch, but rolled in reverse so her lips matched the word "hundreds" better).

I hate using replacements at all, but I'm also not interested in updating trailers into half HD and half SD. Too jarring. But I aim for as much authenticity as humanly possible, right down to the credit fonts, logos and imperfect justification just as it appeared. As to Poltergeist II, there'd be no way to "reconstruct" that teaser as so much of it exists only in the form of the trailer to begin with. There's nothing to restore it with. I'd say that one's on the studio.

There was a 35mm trailer that was scanned to HD:

But in this case I will agree that combining that with the Blu-ray footage would be too jarring.

Same thing with the Poltergeist II teaser because the only thing that exists on Youtube is a low-quality version dubbed in German and some of that footage (primarily Carol Anne saying "They're back." and that's the ONLY line in the teaser.) is available in 2 TV spots.

If I had the editing skills and knowhow I would do it myself.

Yep, that was actually the one I used for reference and linked in the description of my version (always credit where due), although I used a different share of the trailer for the audio, because that audio was not the best quality I found.

I’m curious as to why Scream Factory didn’t bother to get the rights from MGM to release the first film when they had license deals with them and instead released the sequels?

They still have license deals with MGM. Either way that doesn't matter, WB owns the original film now.

Hopefully they will get the rights from WB. This film is long overdue for a special/ collector’s edition.

And Warner also has a deal with Scream Factory.

Incidentally, Warner is handling home video distribution for MGM again (last time was the mid-late 90's).

Point being is this; either Warner or Scream can do a Poltergeist Trilogy set at some point (maybe Scream can up the ante and ask Fox/Disney to sublicense the 2015 film).

I don't think it's an accident that the film has no special features. Only a couple of Spielberg-related films are like that. They usually have at least a doc. I think the lack of special features is intentional and likely on Spielberg's direct orders. Just saying.

That said, Spielberg did relent and allow Sony to include deleted scenes on the UHD of Hook, when the film previously had never had bonus features.

I still have a memo from Tom Cruise's 'people' from when I worked on the Top Gun DVD SE listing changes they wanted made, citing next to disputed content or interview recollections from others involved in the film that 'this is not Tom Cruise' while for the 1953 War of the Worlds it was decreed that the 2005 Spielberg version should not be mentioned in any way because if it was it would have to go through Spielberg and Cruise's people for approval. On The Exorcist 1998 SE Friedkin demanded critical quotes from a Mark Kermode interview with Max von Sydow be rewritten to reflect what he thought von Sydow 'really meant.' With Kubrick films the two major restrictions were never include production or release dates since the films were timeless and never refer to Clockwork Orange as A Clockwork Orange. Can you imagine the veritable blizzard of paperwork a Poltergeist SE would create? It would make this thread look positively anorexic.
