A serious kitty is always a serious kitty. But judging by the run of luck with releases you seem to be having, can't exactly blame you for not being of jolly disposition.

Default First impressions

Only have made it half way through fellowship but these are my impressions so far.

Image: Incredible when not limited by the original source or VFX. I've forgotten how beautiful this film is.

Sound: LFE is insane, reference level material, just on the edge of too much. Dialog has never sounded clearer or better.

Mine came in! No floaters! Two slightly bent corners. Not bad for an Amazon purchase in the plastic bag.

Edit: Digital Codes redeemed in 4K in Movies Anywhere, for those who care.

I had one loose disc in mine. The theatrical cut of The Two Towers. There’s a scratch across it, and while it kind of bothers me, I prefer to watch the extended cut anyways..

I wonder how many people are getting the more expensive Giftset version...doesn't seem worth it...only addition is that One Ring replica...

Chronological order by release date. Then watch your collection in that order to give yourself some context for the original movie-going experience. It's rewarding, especially when you go from "pre-Code" to "Code."
I'd order LOTR-Hobbit the same way then make an exception if I wanted to watch them in story order.
Side benefit: I don't have to figure out what I "feel like" watching because I watch what's next. When I have to pick something, I end up channel-surfing.
Biggest difficulty: Sets with movies from different years. I have to manage my collection from a text file.

it seems there are lots of sets arriving with floaters..mine had 3..the spindles seem to small/loose to keep the discs safe..perhaps new cases should be issued

Probably somebody who's got money to burn. I don't know what they're going to do with a one ring replica because it's useless. You can't do anything with it!

Wait! You mean it doesn’t turn you invisible and reveal your whereabouts to Sauron? What a waste! No real ring! No purchase! I thought it was the genuine ring! How can they do this!?

I have never seen a set of UHDs sell out so fast. I have a local store I typically get my UHDs from, and never once had them get sold out the first day before. Demand must be huge or they didn't manufacture too many of these.

Scalpers likely help them sell out. I saw one scalper with 11 of them sold and trying to sell the last copy for $499.99 on eBay. I'm not completely surprised though, LOTR is arguably the greatest trilogy of all time. It's also widely known and popular, the films grossed $3 billion worldwide. I expect The Godfather trilogy to sell as fast too once that comes out in 2022.

I would go so far as to say that it didn’t even receive the same amount of grain management that Back to the Future received, and I thought that looked lovely. There is a fine layer of grain there, just don’t expect the graininess of, say, the recent Top Gun UHD. The green tint is gone (and I’m watching on my Sony A8H which already leans green), fine textures pop, and colors are robust. Shadow and highlight detail, to my eye, are quite good.
Pretty much nails it for me as well. You see pores, peach fuzz, fine hairs, black heads, etc, no smudging that I can see. Yes, definitely a hint of grain tweaking took place but Christ, it's minor folks, no waxy, pasty mannequin faces present that I saw while jumping around (A LOT). Clear, fine layer of refined grain throughout, very easy on the eye's IMHO, not even close to the level of "management" I saw at times in "The Goonies" (and even that was a decent looking effort overall, this release smokes that when you add in all the other factors, especially the color and HDR...the "they have a troll" scene is a stunner now as far as shadow details go without having to raise blacks into grey territory).

Couple Pixel 4 camera pix FOR FUN LOL...in no way meant to be a deal breaker or seller of the set, just thought it looked great and grabbed a few shots for grins (taking pics of a tv screen, even well calibrated, is a whole other art form, especially grabbing correct colors that your eye's see - and I'm no artist and have shaky hands to boot ha).

Don't mind the long room image much, a phone camera at this distance is anything but accurate - just needed an updated room shot!

EDIT: TV is a Sony XBR x900E 75"

Nice, I can't really find anything about it on Best Buy, I'm guessing older TV?
