I've seen it. It is... not good. It's only half the length of the eventual feature film, so there's a LOT from Heat that's not in it. Whole characters don't appear, and many of the scenes in it are only barely recognizable as the ones that would appear in the finished film. I've successfully managed to largely erase it from my memory, but Wikipedia say the conclusion

Just finished watching it again for the umpteenth time. Anyone know where they filmed the interior of the police station? It has those weird, small windows. I know virtually every other location used in the film, except for that one.

I do like the remastered Fox Blu-ray, even if it isn't the same as the colour timing I saw when watching it in the cinema in the original release.

I have both the first Bluray and the remastered 2017 edition. I kept the first one due to the cooler look. needed some time to get used to the look of the remaster. I wonder how a proper 4K UHD would look like. I know it is available on itunes but haven't seen it yet.

I noticed on the original Warner's blu there's two versions of how the cover is cut: one with rounded edges like how all dvd cover sleeves were and then with normal pointed edges standard like most other blu-ray cover sleeves. Is one of these repress?

I've noticed some mention of superior audio on the Japanese Blu-ray disc but can't find it for sale anywhere outside of Amazon JP (which doesn't ship international, I don't think). Anyone know of another way to obtain it? Or if the audio difference is really that dramatic?

Hey, I just checked my copy. I picked it up around the release in ‘09 and it has rounded edges, so it’s likely the other one is repress.

Well thankfully due to how color was introduced to TVs to maintain backwards compatibility with B&W sets, you can have a B&W cut of everything. Open your picture settings and turn the color off!

Just remember the original value so you can go back to the proper setting once you’re done.

No, he didn't. Film doesn't "look" like digital, so that's really not possible.

Heat was shot on film, and it will always look like it was shot on film. No worries there. Michael Mann oversaw the 4K remastering and decided to change the color timing markedly.

There will always be arguments as to whether the orignal transfer, contained on the DVDs and the first BD, exactly matched the theatrical color timing, but it was certainly reasonably close.

The new color timing is distinct and was an artistic choice Mann made for modern TV displays:

Q: When it came to remastering the film for the Blu-ray, were there specific sequences you focused on?

A: Yeah, the whole film! When you go into Blu-Ray, and you go to 4K, you’re in a different color space. Meaning that what was magenta doesn’t translate exactly. There’s no logarithm you could use to make “magenta” still stay magenta, with that exact color. So you have to imagine everything, from contrast, to how black blacks are, to what the color palette is. The ambition here was: If I was shooting the film two or three years ago, what would it look like? That was really it. So we went into every shot.

Q: Your style in your more recent films has evolved from when you made Heat. Did that affect how you looked at this film?

A: Let me put this rather precisely. When you see an emotion on a human’s face, how much of the face do you see? What constitutes fear? What constitutes apprehension? What constitutes suspicion?

Yes, I evolved, but also, audience perception evolves, and media evolves, year to year. If I shot this film two or three years ago, this particular film would be less chromatic. And the sense of tension would become more pronounced with greater contrast and kind of a more blue-black palette, than the film as I wanted it to be when I shot it in ’94-’95.

Q: Are there any moments in particular that bring up what you’re talking about, that as you’re working with the 4K, any sequence in the film that you think is seen anew on this definitive edition?

A: The one that comes to mind is when Hanna is chasing Neil McCauley at the end of the film past the airport. All that is a lot darker. Primary reds are stripped out. The reflections in the metal – everything is substantially darker, if I showed you the before and after. They’re big steps, they’re not subtleties.

The key line, to me is : "The ambition here was: If I was shooting the film two or three years ago, what would it look like? That was really it. So we went into every shot." He adjusted the color timing to favor his current tastes, and he states it clearly.

Impossible, but that doesn't stop certain directors from trying. Like the supremely disappointing LOTR Trilogy 4k releases.

Its stalled because the deal that was in place at Fox for Regency Enterprises expired while under Disney ownership and they have yet to renew it it.

This pretty much means a UHD is DOA. I can't see Disney actually making an effort to release a catalog title to physical unless the release was ready to go like SPEED. Oh well.
