20th Century Fox Heat (1995) (Director's Definitive Edition)

Quote:
HEAT: DIRECTOR’S DEFINITIVE EDITION

Oscar® winners Al Pacino* and Robert De Niro** both drive one of the most powerful and complex crime dramas of all time - four-time Oscar nominee Michael Mann’s*** 1995 classic HEAT, arriving in an all-new Director’s Definitive Edition May 9 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

In the wake of a precision heist of an armored van, the crew of a fierce, professional thief (De Niro) and an obsessively driven LAPD detective (Pacino) are locked in deadly opposition as they vector towards each other in Mann’s dazzling, twilight vision of Los Angeles. As the stakes escalate and their lives begin to unravel, the crew initiates its most dangerous and complex heist.

Taking inspiration from the late Chicago police detective Charlie Adamson – who killed the actual Neil McCauley in a shootout in 1963 – HEAT was the culmination of years of research by Mann resulting in its depth and range of characters and choreography of action. With its epic scale and stunning performances from Pacino, De Niro, Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd, Amy Brenneman, Diane Venora, Natalie Portman and Jon Voight, HEAT is as incendiary as it was 20 years ago.

UPDATE 2 (9/8/2016):

Quote:
Fox Home Entertainment is targeting early 2017 for a release of the restoration, which looked incredible, Spinotti’s cityscape imagery as dazzling as ever. Indeed, “Heat” maintains an interesting place in Mann’s filmography, before he took the digital plunge and captured the nighttime look of the city so accurately in “Collateral.” It’s built with more classical imagery, kissed by lens flares, painting a dream-like atmosphere that is nevertheless a dark place where men break the law and others hunt them for it.

UPDATE (14/9/2015):

A remaster is all but confirmed, thx to Fox's James Finn and Variety article:

Quote:
The film’s 20th anniversary is thankfully not going unnoticed, though it does come at a time when the Regency catalog is shifting away from Warner Bros. and over to Fox, slowing things down a little bit. A screening and Q&A event has been set for the Toronto Film Festival Tuesday night with Mann in attendance. I’m also told plans are in motion for Fox to release a special DVD/Blu-ray next year. “We have a great relationship with him,” Fox Home Entertainment EVP James Finn told me. “We did the definitive edition on ‘The Last of the Mohicans’ and he loves our team and restoration guys. We’re going to honor it.”
So, special edition is coming next year; maybe it will still be labeled as a 20th Anniv. edition (studios don't care about the math), maybe not, but who cares. In my opinion, there's not a doubt that it will be a (4K) remaster.[/QUOTE]

I personally doubt it will be a new transfer, but October is way off, so you could drop an email to Warner and make them hear you.

We are finally getting a remastered Goodfellas so the odds are good that they would do the same here. Of course I just watched my Batman 25th Anniversary Edition that is the same old disc that defaults to dolby digital so...

Suddenly I'm glad I haven't picked it up yet. Fingers crossed it's a remaster.

Whenever this 20th Anniversary Edition is release, I hope Warner Brothers will fix or remaster the audio on this re-release because, there was something definitely wrong with the audio on the first blu-ray. The volume was variable, inconsistent and way too low. The listener could barely hear the dialogue at normal volume. I had to turned the master volume up a few decibels higher, to actually hear what the actors were saying!

That's just Michael Mann's sound mix in general. All of his films seem to be that way. The Last of the Mohicans, Miami Vice, Collateral, all of the volume for spoken dialogue is significantly lower when compared to that of either the music or the sound effects for gunshots. I just saw Blackhat a few weeks ago and it was the same way.

You can take this with a grain of salt because it's Gawker, but apparently he may have hearing difficulties.

He needs to change this because, it's a problem trying to hear the dialogue in his movies, at normal volume.

If I got this, it'd be a triple dip. So as much as I love this movie, no can do.

Given that 20th anniversaries for Goodfellas and Unforgiven were not deemed important enough for new remasters, I wouldn't hold my breath for this one. I actually think the existing disc is fine. But fingers crossed nonetheless.

Heat is easily the worst one of the bunch though. The low dialog is ridiculously difficult to hear. I'd be willing to double dip if they fixed that.

I just bought the BD on Saturday and I have to say I know people love this film but some of this film has some serious casting / chemistry issues bug time. Amy Brennnan is great in most films / tv but I think she and De Niro has no chemistry and that storyline bored me. I love Ashley Judd but a few of her scenes should have been re shot sometimes I felt like her acting wasn't strong enough esp when she and De Niro had words. otherise it is good but not Thief great IMO.

I would kill for the original cut. One of the two deleted lines of dialogue is my favorite line in the film, sadly.

As a lover of language, I relate, but to be fair, how often have you heard anyone other than a college professor use the word "detritus" in real conversation?

Kind of thought that line fit her character though. I guess over the years Mann must've changed his mind, but I always thought that was just the way she talked being I would assumed someone who liked to use big words to sound smarter.
