United Kingdom Uncle Vanya (2020) starring Toby Jones, Richard Armitage | June 14 2021 | Dazzler

Following sold-out performances during a run tragically cut short by the pandemic, worldwide cinema screenings, and a BBC broadcast, Conor McPherson’s wonderful Uncle Vanya adaptation is coming to Blu-ray this June.

Quote:
Olivier Award-winner Conor McPherson’s stunning new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece, Uncle Vanya, is a portrayal of life at the turn of the 20th century, full of tumultuous frustration, dark humour and hidden passions.

In the heat of summer, Sonya (Aimee Lou Wood) and her Uncle Vanya (Toby Jones) while away their days on a crumbling estate deep in the countryside, visited occasionally only by the local doctor Astrov (Richard Armitage). However, when Sonya’s father Professor Serebryakov (Roger Allam) suddenly returns with his restless, alluring, new wife Yelena (Rosalind Eleazar) declaring his intention to sell the house, the polite facades crumble and long repressed feelings start to emerge with devastating consequences.

Critically acclaimed by both the press and public, Uncle Vanya played to sold out houses each night, before it was shut down as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. During these unprecedented times, witness this extraordinary cast return to the Harold Pinter Theatre in a way that fuses the power of theatre and screen.

Starring Toby Jones, Richard Armitage, Rosalind Eleazar, Aimee Lou Wood, Anna Calder-Marshall, Dearbhla Molloy, Peter Wight, Roger Allam

Synopsis:
Following its critically acclaimed opening in London before it was shut down as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sonia Friedman Productions presents a stunning production of Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece Uncle Vanya. Made during the 2020 lockdown and filmed without an audience, the new adaptation was written by Conor McPherson and directed by Ian Rickson.

Sonya and her Uncle Vanya throw their lives into maintaining the crumbling family estate, only visited occasionally by the radical and inspiring local doctor Astrov. However, when Sonya’s father, Professor Serebryakov, suddenly returns with his restless, alluring, new wife Yelena, long-hidden truths start to emerge.

Starring Toby Jones (Journey’s End, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Richard Armitage (Strike Back, The Hobbit franchise), Uncle Vanya is a stunning, powerful performance for our times which demands to be seen.

Dazzler Media presents Uncle Vanya on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital from 14th June
