I think it all makes sense in context. While Robin Williams himself may have been a fan of the series, it wouldn't make sense for his character to know how it's pronounced.

It also makes perfect sense to me that the kid would lie about the toy, ESPECIALLY if his parents are the type who care about what he's watching - most likely he would have seen the show and/or EoE at a friend's house (this friend being someone with less attentive parents), and wanted to try and trick his parents into buying him some merch from the series. Believe me, I used to try to pull this crap all the time when I was his age. Never worked, but nowadays I'm thankful that my parents cared so much.

I doubt he had seen the movie at that point. N. America didn’t get End of Evangelion on VHS and DVD until September 24th, 2002. One Hour Photo premiered in US theaters on August 21st, 2002.

Holy shit dude I wasn’t being serious. If you saw my previous post asking the same question you would have known I went on a nerd rant and I questioned “who lets their kid watch EoE” within the context of the movie. I doubt if ANYBODY who wrote the movie actually knew about Evangelion at all or even if it had a wider audience the scene would have had more attention. They would have thought to not include characters from a movie that kids weren’t likely to watch. It would have made the scene feel more realistic instead of lazy for people that actually know what Evangelion is. The writers probably would have been like “give him an Eva Unit One” or something. I couldn’t give two shits about kids watching adult crap. Jeez dude, chill…

You have a good point. I tried to do the same shit with South Park when it first came out. Unfortunately because of how well known it was I couldn’t get my parents to buy me anything South Park related because it was like the number one “not okay” cartoon that “responsible” parents needed to be aware of.
From what I remember in the movie, it just didn’t seem believable for the kid’s character to me is all. I think that character getting the pronunciation wrong and saying the toy was a good guy removed me enough to be like “nah this is some bullshit” and made it hard to just accept it and move on. Still loved the movie and Robin Williams did a great job. He only played like 3 movie roles as the bad guy and I think one tv role and killed it in all of them.

It was a treat to hear Amanda as Rei again in the trailer (even for one line). She, Spike, and Allison sound as good as always. I already miss Trini as Mari though, and even Jerry Jewell as Kaworu. Honestly, I’m not expecting the dub of at least the first two to be better than FUNi’s dubs, especially without Mike McFarland’s direction, but I’d love to be proven wrong.
