I just hope GKIDS gets this Amazon cast (probably using wither the same dubbing studio or NYAV) to redub the OG series and movies for their Blu-ray release. And said Blu-ray release to also include the old ADV dubs (OG dub for all original 26 episodes + the director's cut dubs for 21 - 26), the Manga dubs for the movies (plus the Commentary of Evil) and the Netflix dubs for everything.
It would be cool if GKIDS could at least get both existing dubs. Wouldn't mind seeing the Amazon Rebuild cast redo the series with a more modern approach either.

I think the fact that so much of the ADV cast appears in the Amazon dubs does shed some light on how many of the decisions that went into the VSI/Netflix redub were really at Khara's insistence. I don't doubt that they made the calls based on the samples VSI gave them, but as someone else suggested, I suspect the decision to look for new blood, or at least not give preferential treatment to the ADV cast, was more on VSI. Clearly Khara has nothing in particular against them, since several of them returned as soon as a new dubbing studio entered the picture.

In fact, given what was pointed out earlier about VSI's work often being rushed, I kind of wonder how much of their dub's rote adherence to Dan Kanemitsu's weird pedant translation was really mandated by Khara. I'm not disputing that they're more hands-on about localization since the 3.0 situation, but I wonder if I was wrong about just how much of it was really that as opposed to VSI not bothering to more substantially revise the dialogue.

Does the script for 3.33’s FUNi dub (the Blu-ray version) sound as dry and awkward as the Netflix dub? Because that was also apparently micromanaged by Khara.
(I’ve only seen the first two Rebuild films.)

I was wondering about that myself. I only ever watched the dub once, and I don't really remember what it was like. I'll have to give it another listen.

Quote:
25 years after “Neon Genesis Evangelion” premiered on TV and (third) impacted not just anime but TV storytelling as well, the franchise seems to be coming to a close with the last of the “Rebuild of Evangelion” films finally arriving via Amazon Prime worldwide this Friday.

The franchise’s creator Hideaki Anno spoke with Collider recently about the upcoming “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time” film and got to ask him whether he was truly done with the franchise and if he had plans to revisit it.

Anno surprisingly revealed there is one aspect of the world in ‘Rebuild’ which he wants to explore in the future: “There’s always the 14-year gap in the story, so in some form, I want to shed light into that.”

That gap he refers to is the 14-year time jump at the beginning of the previous film “Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo” – a gap in which the world has experienced a near-apocalyptic event and has fundamentally changed.

While Anno believes there’s room for more stories to be told, the ending of Thrice Upon a Time is an endpoint for him with no plans to explore further on: “At this point, I don’t feel that I’m going to continue the story where I left off.”

No, but it does have some weird stiltedness from being too exact to the translation. I saw the original Funi dub in theaters and from my memory the main thing that stood out as changed from the theater to home video was Asuka referring to Mari as four-eyed crony vs four-eyes in the theatrical dub. They also changed Asuka calling Shinji an ******* to calling shinji a brat. I also recall some of the dialogue between shinji and kaworu was redone and some of the lore verbage was changed up or altered from theater to home video, but I couldn't tell you exactly how it changed tbh. Honestly the amount of changes made to the original 3.0 dub was not as much as some people on forums have made it out to be. funi definitely didn't redub the entire film

This is the latest update regarding the Rebuild films…

Amazon Prime Video announced on Thursday that it will exclusively stream Evangelion: 3.0+1.01: Thrice Upon A Time (Shin Evangelion Gekijō-ban :||), the new version of the "final" Evangelion film, worldwide (except Japan) on August 13.

In addition, Amazon Prime Video will stream the first three films: Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance, and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo in over 240 countries and territories.

This was the last word on Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to N. America on Blu-ray. The story is dated October 3rd, 2020. Clearly, it’s taking longer than expected, but this should catch you up on everything you need to know.

What kind of early 2000's English department store even sold Evangelion figures? Feels like such a random little placement out of nowhere.

I thought of this too. The only thing I could think of off the top of my head is they used an anime toy prop instead of just any other toy is that Robin Williams was a big fan of anime and Zelda, so someone who had no knowledge of the subject decided to include “something anime” and call it a day. They prolly avoided using a well known anime or even just a straight forward comic book character because of licensing costs. I doubt it was Robin Williams, cause if he was a fan of Evangelion I’m sure he would have said something.

News to me but not as oddly out of place with a toy store (were the ones in TRU imports? I never knew if there was a domestic toy line for the series here).

Nowadays it's more common to find anime figures in stores. I remember spotting a abandoned Cowboy Bebop Spike figure in Walmart's grocery section a while back.

It was said that Robin Williams was a fan of Eva, but I don't think that's ever really been proven real. I've even heard that he auditioned to voice Gendo in FUNi's Rebuild dubs, which is almost certainly not true.

Yeah, my Wal-Mart sells plenty of toys, plushes, and figures from Dragon Ball Super, My Hero Academia, etc.

According to IMDB, “Robin Williams was a fan of the Japanese anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) and specifically asked to have a model from the series incorporated as part of the film. The model itself, contrary to Jake's explanation that it is of a "good guy", is of an unintelligent, creature-like antagonist from the adult-oriented film ending to the series, Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (1997). The boxed toy was supposedly from Williams' own personal collection.”

It was an exceptionally tiny section of what I’d describe as “adult” toys. There were figures from Spawn, X-Men, and the occasional anime figure. That’s how I learned about Neon Genesis Evangelion and Trigun.

I've seen FMA and some Gundam Universe figures at Walmart too. Even Target and Hobby Lobby has a Gunpla selection now. I love it.

We know Robin had quite the collection which his daughter has shared some online before, so the story about it being his figure would check out. There's plenty of fans who've seen the show but pronounce the name wrong.

If this is true and he was actually a fan of Evangelion as well then Robin trolled a bunch of anime nerds. Why you do us dirty Robin Williams?!

Seriously though, who lets their kid watch a movie with a kid jerking it over a girl in a hospital bed?
