So question on the OA and DC cuts of the last few episodes:

The original ADV discs for the DC episodes DID have a modified dub for episodes 25 and 26. This modified version (it was a mix of the old vocal stems and new work) was left off of the Platinum release. (You can immediately tell from the new Gendo voice.)

I'm wondering which version of the adv dub they will use for those episodes? My guess is just the standard dub since it was the go to before, but that updated dub did have a few slight translation differences that would be nice to have for completionist sake.

Basically, Studio Khara was REALLY unhappy with the dub for 3.33 and had FUNimation go back and redub it. There's also 2 subtitle tracks on the release, and Dan Kanemitsu is credited for the translation with "Courtesy of Studio Khara". Oh, and David Fleming is credited for "Subtitle Editor" also with "Courtsey of Studio Khara". So they were really hands on with the project.

FUNimation's 3.33 release ended up being pushed back by nearly 2 full years because of it. It was originally supposed to come out February 18, 2014, but didn't come out until February 2, 2016.

In some ways it almost helps tune out the technological dialogue that doesn't mean much even when parsed out and analyzed.

Ironically, the fluff overcomplicated technobabble is the hardest to understand but usually has little overall effect on the characters and plot, while the introspective dramatic dialogue that actually provides important character development and emotional impact is comparatively easy. I think it actually gets easier to understand as the series goes along.

One of my favorite nuances off the top of my head is when Gendo, who throughout the series always addressed Fuyutsuki informally, e.g. 「頼む」, acknowledges him as his former professor and switches to a more formal 「頼みます」 in EoE.

I was watching one other Hideaki Anno film a long time ago, Shin Godzilla. That film also was very procedurally minded, with most workers and politicians using shorthand and formal terms to get their point across. Technobabble and work language is part of Anno's motif, so I try to not let those details get the best of me when watching his works, even if I suspect they're essential to the mythology of his works.

He does make it easier for me to digest Star Trek: The Next Generation when I finally made for its episodes.

WARNING--RANT AHEAD

I've refrained on commenting about this release thus far out of fear of being dragged through the streets in public, but here it goes.

Can't we be happy that one of the most historically important anime of all time is finally available again to the Western World after being out-of-print for like a decade?

I was exposed to Eva "late," when I was a teenager (2008-9). It was and still is my all-time favorite series. I had (and unfortunately sold) the ADV platinum DVDs. I've purchased both versions of the BD from Japan. I had a wall scroll of Asuka and Rei when I was in college (cringe). I had toys and model kits of the EVA units. I still drink coffee out some weird bootleg mug from Korea with the NERV logo on it. I would consider myself slightly more than a casual fan of the series.

I get that people are disappointed about "Fly me to the Moon," I do. But is anyone really jaded enough to think that GKIDS/ATA didn't at least try? Obviously it was beyond their budget. I'm a pretty cynical guy, but even I can assume that they did the best they could with what they had. They are not Funimation and they don't have Sony money.

Re: the packaging.
To everyone complaining about the "oversized/cumbersome" packaging--don't buy it. It was made clear from the start that this was the Limited Edition first press with a "standard" version to follow, really nothing to complain about here. I personally love the homage to the LD releases.

In summary: chill out. You have options. If you don't like it, don't buy it. The Japanese release is easily available at around half the price of the US set and it does have FMTTM. If it's important to you, get that release. I apologize if my take on this comes off as harsh, but there has been far too much negativity in this thread in the past couple days and I have been reluctant to post my opinion without giving myself a few days to process my thoughts and figure out how to properly word them. There is so much bad stuff going on in the world right now, to lose your sh*** over this just seems to petty (IMO).

P.S. If I do have one complaint about all this, it's the hilariously low print quantity of the LE. They should have done an open pre-order for a week or so rather than a 5K print run. They SEVERELY underestimated the demand for this set. That's just my two cents. It is what it is.

RANT OVER

I was pretty burnt out yesterday about it, but I'm getting over it. I don't like the UE they put together or the price they asked for it. I don't care if I missed it. I wanted a nice edition of Eva in my collection, but that edition probably won't exist, so why should I be upset?

I am fully prepared to be disappointed again if my only other option is some barebones standard packaging set, but those are the breaks. I wish Gkids handled this differently (making a UE at a digestible price, FMTTM isn't their fault), but ultimately it is great that we will finally get Eva on Blu in the US.

If I was interested in picking up a Japanese Blu-ray release of the series and the movies (that includes FMtTM) what would be the best option? Did the latest Japanese collection come out recently? I know the 3rd and 4th rebuild movies are coming out on 4K, so is it fair to think that maybe Japan will do a 4K collection soon?

There is no Japanese set with the rebuild movies. There are just two releases the original Limited edition and the standard edition, same discs the Limited has different packaging and a large (270 pg) book. Or there are single discs but EOE doesn't have one so you can only get the tv series that way.

Standard on Amazon Japan @$160

i would recommend the limited pressing evangelion blu-ray box that came out in 2015
catalog number KIXA-90501
it’s out of print, but you can definitely hunt it down used. make sure to check that the outer case is in good condition, many arrived damaged out of box

it’s the most extensive blu-ray box available (fly me to the moon is included!)

no word on a complete box for the rebuild series yet, but the individual blu-ray releases are great! highly recommended

I think it's a pretty silly rant.

If people are feeling negative about this release, why shouldn't they express it? This is, after all, a discussion board where people come to express their opinions. If that doesn't happen to be the happy, positive opinion you seem to want (or demand), live with it.

Yeah. There's a lot of lousy things going on in the world today, and one of them is the propensity of some people to try and shut other people up because they don't want to hear anything that doesn't agree with their own opinion.

I ordered the Ultimate Edition from ATA as soon as it went up without even reading anything, I just didn't wanna miss it. I've experienced things selling out the second they drop and it sucks. It was pricey, but I don't really regret it tbh.

Idc about FMttM, tbh I didn't even know each ending had a different cover, I think I just watched it once then skipped it each episode after haha
I do agree that an "Ultimate" edition shouldn't be missing something as simple as an ending song, but it seems like there was nothing they could do about it, oh well.
I do like the song, don't get me wrong, but it's not a huge deal for me.

I do think it's hilarious though that there's people here discussing importing the Jp blu-rays because they have the song, when they have no English options whatsoever... "I can't understand anything that's being said now, but at least I got sweet tunes"
If you can understand Japanese then I'm obviously not talking about you here.
Not hating on anyone, I understand collecting stuff, just think that's a little funny.

I will keep my eye out and see what the other editions will be though. The paperweight and lanyard idc about. The art is cool, but I already own the laserdiscs. The book is nice, but I have a bunch of Eva artbooks already. I originally watched the series subbed, so have no attachment to either dub. The few times I gave the original dub a go, I cringed every time I heard Shinji, his voice was awful and I've never heard the Netflix dub.
I'll still probably keep my order though, I just like collecting "stuff", rip my wallet.
Though, if there's a nice steelbook, that may tempt me to switch.
I do agree, I hate a cumbersome storage methods though. I have 2 other Ultimate Editions from ATA: the Wolf's Rain and Eureka Seven ones. They just came in basic cardboard boxes with posters in tubes, art books, art cards and the blurays themselves in fold out digipacks housed in slipboxes that easily fit on shelves.

I do own the Australian Platinum Boxset, for whatever that's worth, if you think that may be influencing my opinion here.

Also, I am in Australia, so whenever Madman finally decides to give us some info, I may cancel and order from them if the price is around or cheaper than what I paid for it at ATA: £166.66+25(shipping)=£191.66 ~ $366.11(AUD)

I was worried ours wouldn't be as good, considering we don't often get the cool editions everyone else gets, but looking at the bottom of the UE box, it seems the Madman logo is there, so we'll be getting that or something in the same box at least.

Someone should just sneak into Gkids Mission Impossible style and switch out the final edits with new edits containing spliced in FMtTM and the missing OAs. It’s not a bootleg if they print it and it’s got their name on it. Does anybody have any GKids contacts, or know if they are hiring? It’s still early enough, we can infiltrate…

I'm sure the master is already done by now. You would have to sneak into the replication plant.

Lawyers would also descend everywhere once they quickly learn about Fly Me to the Moon being in there when it wasn't licensed.

I'm willing to bet even Funimation Global Group (aka Sony/Aniplex) wouldn't be able to get the Ending Theme either. Hell, I'd argue given Gkids got the GLOBAL LICENSE of the TV series and movie, where they're allowed to have local-based companies like AtA and such get a sub-license from them, I'd say you're underestimating their resources. And if even they can't reach an agreement to clear the license for the song, no one else can. The long and short of it is getting the song simply isn't financially feasible.

It's frustrating not getting the perfect edition, but que sera sera. Sorry you had to sell out your Plantinum DVDs. Under certain circumstances, I would do the same. But I haven't, and probably won't. I mentioned this a while ago in this merged thread, but if I want everything, I'm forced to keep the DVDs. I do plan to buy the blu-ray of the series/movies; not with the Ultimate Edition, but a set that is more shelf-friendly, because at least the Japan-only bonuses would be carried over and most of them weren't available before. It is an inconvenience to carry the show on both formats when I prefer to upgrade and stay a single format, but I choose to compromise.

They would recall it and cease shipments as soon as they find out. Any copies that got out would fetch a pretty penny on eBay though.

Plus there would be quality control checks for the discs before anything ships. If anything that would just cause a delay.

Why are we humoring this idea anyway

Shh, just don’t say anything to anyone for a while. The damage will have already been done by the time they find out. A friend of a friend’s cousin works in the replication plant. It’ll be taken care of.. We will have our definitive edition AND THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS IN THE END!!
