Help with PS3 and SD DVD UpScale Stretching Image

Hi,

I just bought a PS3 (after returning a Samsung BD-P2550) as a Blu-Ray player and DVD player. I also have a Samsung LNA550 HD 1080p tv. Using an HDMI cable.

I know that the new generation PS3 systems have upconverters for SD DVDs but I am having the following trouble:

Every movie (SD DVD) I put in is being stretched to fit the entire screen of my television. I have tinkered with every setting that I can think of on the PS3 - this even happens when I select NOT to upconvert.

When I pop the DVD in my cheap RCA DVD player (which also upconverts) the image displays properly.

Please tell me that the $40 RCA is not better than the PS3 at displaying regular DVDs.

How can I display the DVD the way it was meant to be shown (with the letterbox bars) through the PS3? Why is it not doing this automatically?

I have tried watching "Band of Brothers", "In Treatment HBO series" and "Saving Private Ryan". Now I know that Ryan should be showing letterbox black bars because it was filmed in Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1.

Anyone know what I can do to properly watch SD DVD's on PS3?
