The western could be Buck and the Preacher (directed by and starring Sidney Poitier).

The Film Forum's June/July schedule (PDF) has been posted, and guess who's back by popular demand ..Of those, I'll probably consider seeing High and Low.

Nothing else Janus/Criterion-related of note. They will be showing the 4K restoration of The Discreet Charm of The Bourgeoisie, which I could see Criterion doing a 4K of as well.

I personally would not get too excited for August announcements. Couple of late-00s indies, 70s western, French classic that you might have already bought elsewhere, recent documentary, no rereleases or 4Ks type of month.
Why didn't they release the artwork and titles, like they did last time? Instead of offering vague suggestions. And, I resent them saying that we shouldn't get too excited for the announcement. They don't know what excites me.

Couple of late-00s indies
- Medicine for Melancholy would be nice, since Jenkins is grossly absent from the collection. But I don't love that movie.
- A lot of LGBT filmmakers were active during this time. And I would love to see I Killed My Mother, The Headless Woman, or To Die Like A Man get announced.

70s western
- Well, it could be anything. But I'm hoping for Buck & the Preacher, like BarnDoor suggested.

French classic that you might have already bought elsewhere
- Well, I don't know what they consider a French classic, but I would guess Contempt or Grand Illusion. But those have been previously released by Criterion on DVD. I would love to see Les amis (or even Un enfant dans la foule) from Gerard Blain, though neither is probably considered a classic or has been released anywhere else.

recent documentary
American Factory, My Octopus Teacher, The Most Beautiful Boy in the World, Procession...? Literally, 100s of docs released every year.

Oh, well! I guess, we will just have to wait and see.

Don’t want to get a region free player for one movie, but on the other hand, no more region locking to worry about.

Demonlover is borderline terrible, and nothing like those other two films. But I hope for your sake, it's announced soon.

What are the odds on Blow-Up coming to 4K anytime? It's the only Antonioni Criterion I lack.

The French movie might also be a Becker film. Either Le Trou or Casque d'Or, since both of those are out in the UK via StudioCanal.

It's not something Criterion released previously.

Based on the clues, these are my guesses.

Medicine for Melancholy
Half Nelson
La Grande Illusion
China 9, Liberty 37
American Factory

Ysah, we've been discussing it. Because he said there's no rereleases, which I assume he means no upgrades, that would rule out La Grande Illusion. I also imagine he would be a bit more positive about the titles if that one was amongst them.

Here are my predictions that I've kind of scattered throughout a couple posts, as well as a couple from others that I think are possible:

American Factory
The Crime of Monsieur Lange
Medicine for Melancholy
Prince of Broadway
Buck and the Preacher (50th anniversary this year, and with Poitier passing, it would be a fitting time to release it).

I just noticed Criterion added the French film A Monkey in Winter (Un singe en hiver) (1962) to their streaming service this month, and it plays with the Criterion logo before the film. Is this new to Criterion, or have they had it for some time? Couldn't find any mention of it outside of lists of the May Channel lineup.

I saw today that in Japan they did a very big Kurosawa retrospective event like the one Janus is doing except they used all 4k remasters for them (not just Rashomon). I saw it from this video below. It's in Japanese but gets mentioned at this time frame below (or 2min roughly).

https://youtu.be/jTt1qE2e6eY?t=118

Seems likely they'll be releasing new blu ray in Japan with the event over (or maybe even actual 4k discs). With some luck Criterion is planning to release their Kurosawa set shortly afterwards.

I noticed they also added "Any Number Can Win" with Delon and Gabin. Both that and "A Monkey and Winter" are excellent films that have been put out on BD by Gaumont, but I'm not sure how long they've been on the streaming service.

I really hope we get a Kurosawa set in November.

Do these start with the Criterion label? Kino is working on a deal with Gaumont, so if Criterion doesn't have these, then they could release these. If Criterion has them, then it might be 2030 before these get a physical release.

I can feel it...

And I was about to give in and start upgrading my handful of Kurosawa DVDs to Blu-rays.

I hope so, and maybe the reasons they haven't released anything, because they are waiting for the 4K masters.

Both start with the Criterion logo. I had stumbled across A Monkey and Winter earlier (that's a weird sentence out of context), and I suppose that could be considered a French classic, same for "Any Number...", so one could be announced as early as Tomorrow, though I'm still guessing it's The Crime of Monsieur Lange.
