When I saw this movie for the first time when it was released in 1968 (I was 12), I had no idea what it was about or what to expect. I thought it was just going to be another space movie with cool monsters and explosions. When I walked out of the theater, I knew my life had changed - it was much, much more than "just a movie". 2001 addressed big topics - the history and future of man, technological issues, and the meaning of life, among others. And it did it in an intelligent way - it raised more questions than answers, thus requiring the viewer to think. Amazingly enough, it did it without explosions, foul language, sex, or one-scene-per-second MTV "action" editing. I can't think of another film that has tackled an issue or subject of larger scope. The overriding emotion I was had upon leaving the theater was one of wonder.
