I'm still convinced that Criterion is sitting on "The Defiant Ones".
Almost every Stanley Kramer film has been released on a domestic Blu-ray except this one, which is probably his most highly regarded film critically (if not most commercially successful)

That would make sense. Since it's with MGM, I feel like Kino would've released it ages ago if it was available to them.

I forgot it was MGM. I was thinking it was Paramount. Guess that means I’m all in for Come back Little Sheba come New Years Morning!

I think you are probably right. I suspect they are also sitting on Paper Moon and Winchester '73. At this point I wish they would lose the rights so someone else could release them. Yeah, Kino, I'm talking about you

[Show spoiler]Bring on the cries of "suck up!" and "fan boy!" from the usual group of tossers. You know who you are....

How likely is Chaplin (1992) a title that Kino will consider for 4K?

Hopefully, very likely. I've never seen a Chaplin film all the way through but I've been a HUGE fan of this 1992 biographical film from the beginning. It's a great, epic film that deserved lots of awards. Downey did a phenomenal job channeling the silent film star and I especially loved the scenes depicting the actor's later years. If Kino isn't interested maybe Criterion will pick it up.

Would be a great release for Kino, especially with the Lionsgate Blu-ray being bugged for several of us years ago. I can't remember the exact issue, but I think it was something weird like the picture only appearing as a small box on the top left or right side of the screen. I ended up having to return mine. I still haven't seen the movie, but I caved and bought it digitally semi-recently.

I hope so too. I had watched it when I was younger and my memories of it aren't super sharp, but I suspect it played some part in forming my love of film.

I've been reading about old Hollywood and it reminded me of this. I want to watch it now, but I'd prefer to save it for a proper 4K show. This is a tier of film that should be seen in as close to a cinema experience as possible. I hope I don't have to wait too long.

It's highly unlikely we'll see a 4K release of Metropolis. From what I've read the 2010 "Complete Metropolis" restoration was done from 2K scans. And given the conditions of the elements, and the amount of work done for that restoration, it's doubtful anyone would re-scan anything at 4K. So, short of upscales, the Blu-ray is probably as good as it will get. It looks pretty impressive all things considered.

I've never seen it, but it looks great, and the cast list is insane:

Quote:
Starring Jodie Foster, Dennis Hopper, Charlie Sheen, Vincent Price, Dean Stockwell, John Turturro, Fred Ward, Tony Sirico, Julie Adams, Catherine Keener, Tony Basil, Alex Cox, Bob Dylan, Joe Pesci & Sy Richardson – Shot by Edward Lachman (Far from Heaven) – Directed by Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider, Colors, The Hot Spot).

A little surprised Lionsgate didn't release it through their Vestron Series. I wonder if Kino has any other Vestron titles.

Let alone the fact that Lionsgate did the remaster themselves a few years ago.

That does not compute! Seriously, dude, you need to see some Chaplin movies! (New Year's Eve would be a good day to watch The Gold Rush!)

Agreed, especially re: Downey. I'm convinced his study of Chaplin made him a better actor in all his subsequent roles. I never liked him much before, but he delivers the goods here. I swear I see little shadows of Chaplin even in his Iron Man performances.

I wish I could be optimistic about a 4K release. I had some credit on VUDU that was about to expire, so I used it to "purchase" CHAPLIN in HD a few months ago. I have a DVD, but never picked up the Blu-ray, the reviews sounded pretty lackluster.

Catchfire is an interesting movie. Basically, Hopper is a hitman who has to eliminate Foster but opts not to and they go on the run. I watched the theatrical version earlier this year on Amazon Prime.

I'll be thrilled to see the director's cut since Hopper was so pissed with the cuts that he asked his name to be removed from the regular version.

The cast is insane, even down to Catherine Keener in a bit part and Joe Pesci in an un-credited role.
