-freeyourmind "One of my favorite film trilogies is the Before Trilogy. Past Lives reminded me of the Richard Linklater films. Past Lives is a romance film in a nontraditional sense. If you are expecting the usual romance film with a happy ending, look elsewhere. Past Lives’ biggest strength is in the story and how grounded and uncompromising it was. In real life, love is almost never like it is in the movies, but I can see the realness in Past Lives, and that’s why it’s one of my favorite films of 2023.”

Even those thoroughly happy with the course their lives took, we all remember someone that we saw an entirely different life with. But, someone moves, circumstances change, sometimes it's just the right person at the wrong time. Regardless of the 'why', life goes on. Past Lives beautifully captures this feeling. It's gorgeously shot, almost like a photo album. It's also like a photo album in the way it collects snapshots of moments throughout the two main characters' lives that say so much about where they've been and where they may be headed. An early shot where one character walks a straight path out of frame and the other ascends a staircase is a wonderful metaphor for the film as a whole. And that isn't to say that one direction is better than the other. We all just have our own paths.”
