Disney’s future is definitely streaming and eventually we’re gonna have to accept that.
A new UHD release of POTC COTBP ain’t happening. As you mentioned, just got to keep the BD or accept the UHD. Kinda like Lord of The Rings: Peter Jackson is never releasing another set. He’s happy with the upscale and like James Cameron, they both don’t give a shit about too much DNR, ‘cos they both love that shot on digital look, despite the movie being shot on film.

And Disney have shown just how hard they want consumers to stream in Australia, as they are forcing Aussies to stream OR import, since Disney are no longer releasing physical media down under.

It’s a sad world when films with massive box office takings like Inside Out ($1.5 Billion), Deadpool and Wolverine ($1.1 Billion - the biggest R-rated movie ever), and other films that did well for the mouse house like the latest Planet of the Apes, and now Alien: Romulus (critically acclaimed and currently No.1 at the Box Office), All these films will not be available to buy on physical media in Australia… And it’s truly f*cked up when importing costs a lot more then buying local. Hence, the reason behind my scathing signature.

I have a question about the first four films:

Are the 4K digital versions better than the discs? I thought I read that they looked better than the discs Disney released.

I own the series (with the last one in 4K) on Blu-ray along with a Panasonic UB820. Not sure if the 4K digital versions are worth the upgrade or if I should just watch the Blu-rays on the 4K player.

They are still far too dim... like watching through a pair of sunglasses.

Yeah the first 3 movies on BD are still damn fantastic. Not only do they still have the original award worthy sound design that trumps even the best Atmos mixes right now, the picture is so damn good, it's nearly HDR-like. I don't know what Disney did them to make them this good but they aren't capable of that kind of care these days.

Chest & End still look great, but Pearl? Fantastic? Nearly HDR-like?

Seriously? The UHD is miles better regarding the blown highlights on the BD of Black Pearl.

My only gripes with 2 and 3’s 4K remasters are that they’re slightly cropped on the sides when compared to 1’s slightly expanded image on the UHD (I like seeing an expanded image with some extra details, and not the complete opposite), and they still retain a green tint in the white balance, which was never present in the first movie and even the original trailers and promotional VFX stills.

So someone buying this in 2025, should I just get the 1080p Blurays over the UHD?

Definitely. I was so excited when the 4K was announced & pre-ordered it from Disney Movie Club (RIP). That was, until I saw the screenshots. I returned my copy. I hope that someday we get a proper release.

Or wait for some further edition, as both sadly are highly flawed. I’m a rare one that likes how the 4K looks on my TV, though it’s definitely dark almost Alien Vs Predator Requiem level issue in that regard. On the flip side, the BD is noticeably blown out, some of the darker scenes look great, but the daylight stuff always has looked kind of obnoxious to me. The DVD honestly has the most ideal overall appearance, just lacks the resolution anyone wants nowadays.

The 1080ps still have some of the best audio in home entertainment history.

Unless Disney has a complete overhaul of its executive structure, that is HIGHLY unlikely. Enjoy your Blu-ray's as they will be it for a looooooooooong time to come.
