Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Blu-ray 3-Disc Diamond Edition

I shook the dust off of this Blu-ray to refresh my memory before going to see the new live-action remake this week.



Considering the fact that roughly one-half of its narrative is devoted to characters cleaning up a cottage and washing up for supper, the 1937 animated classic, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, is still fascinatingly riveting. This Walt Disney Productions motion picture, based on the 1812 Brothers Grimm fairy tale, was the first full-length traditionally animated movie, one with visuals that still look freshly innovative. My favorite moment in terms of pure sight and sound is an early scene where the title character is reflected in the water ripples of a well as she sings.

Before I even saw Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for the first time at some point during my childhood, I was already familiar with its songs, composed by Frank Churchill and Larry Morey, by way of their inclusion on the record playlists for the rest time during my kindergarten school. “Whistle While You Work” conjures the most prominent memories from those days. Sadly, whistling while you work is not a normalized habit at my office place of employment now in present day.

I love how the dark touches in this screen story are really quite macabre, a testament to the fact that the movie was likely catering to viewers of all ages in 1937, as opposed to being categorized simply as a film for children. The sequence where the evil Queen instructs the Huntsman to bring back Snow White's heart in a box still merits a double take.

Snow White, with her operatic voice brought to life by Adriana Caselotti, is still one of the great underdog personas of the Disney animated canon. Of all of the characters in this film, however, my 53 year-old self relates the most to the dwarf, Sleepy, and to the turtle.



I still own the Blu-ray. I may or may not upgrade to a 4K UHD Blu-ray at some point, practical money considerations and all when it comes to my physical media collecting habits of the future. As is, the standard Blu-ray still looks lovely.
