I have an HSU research sub, I have absolutely fallen in love with it. I listened to sunfire, Velodyne, eD, Polk and earthquake. I found the Polk was not nearly adequate, and that the velodyne and sunfire were just too expensive. I have also heard great great things from SVS subs. I wasn't able to listen to them, but I know between HSU and SVS you will find great subs. From HSU research check out the ULS-15 and from SVS look at the PB-12 plus. Both are in your price range. I have noticed something similar from other companies run in the $2k range. Another option you have is doing two subs to even out the bass distribution.
