--- start cut here --- This is mostly to PS3 owners in the US and Canada (release dates elsewhere are often different), but parts of it apply to PS3 owners everywhere. We've just entered a critical phase for both the PS3 and the Blu-ray movie format, where the futures of both are tied to a large degree. The PS3 succeeding will help the success of the Blu-ray movie format and the Blu-ray movie format succeeding will help the success of the PS3. The PS3 is currently in a battle as a game system, while it is also involved in the battle between the Blu-ray movie format and the HD DVD movie format. The time period between now and the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas starting January 7th, 2008 is critical because studio support could change near the end of the year or at that show, based on the performances of each format in this fourth quarter of 2007. Those who favor the PS3 and the Blu-ray movie format should obviously want any studio changes at that show to go in Blu-ray's direction, but even strictly gamers who prefer the PS3 would likely be better off in the long run if the Blu-ray movie format can gain another advantage between now and the end of that show, like Warner going exclusive to Blu-ray and/or Universal going neutral (or exclusive to Blu-ray). Real disc sales are likely to sway studios like these much more than petitions. Those who have been following the movie format battle likely know that Paramount/Dreamworks dropped Blu-ray as they went from neutral to HD DVD exclusively (a major newspaper reported $150 million in incentives from Toshiba were involved). Paramount/DW biggest day-and-date title (Transformers) will be released on HD DVD October 16th and this is HD DVD's best chance this year to outsell Blu-ray for a week by Nielsen count. If they are able to win the week, then the ratio which they win by will be scrutinized, as Blu-ray has won many weeks by 2:1 and the HD DVD camp would love to do that. Fortunately, a couple of Blu-ray studios along with some retailers have made it easier for those who want Blu-ray movies to get them at great prices this week, with various buy-one-get-one (BOGO) free deals going on, along with a great deal for Planet Earth on Blu-ray at outpost.com for $50 plus shipping. For those who don't know, Planet Earth has been called the best thing ever shown on television by some and has a 9.8 out of 10 rating from users on imdb.com here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0795176/ As far as the week that the HD DVD camp would like to win by Nielsen count, sales are counted for Monday 10/15/2007 through Sunday 10/21/2007. For online places like Amazon the day they ship is the day that should count for Nielsen. Also, Wal-Mart is not counted in Nielsen, although Blu-ray sales are still important to Wal-Mart. Those are some of the reasons to help out the cause, but these BOGO deals are an extra special bargain too. Here is a list of places doing BOGO deals: (list goes here). There are lots of other great titles out there that aren't part of the BOGO deals also. Sales for neutral titles in the Nielsen charts are also very important (and likely especially important to the one major neutral studio, Warner). Some upcoming titles from Warner where the sales ratios between the Blu-ray version and the HD DVD version are likely to be scrutinized closely are: October 23rd: * 2001: A Space Odyssey * A Clockwork Orange * Eyes Wide Shut * Full Metal Jacket: Deluxe Edition * The Shining (1980) * The Sopranos: Season Six, Part Two October 30th: * License to Wed November 6th: * The Aviator November 13th: * Ocean's Thirteen * That’s Entertainment: The Complete Collection November 27th: * The Omega Man December 11th: * Harry Potter movies (all of them) * Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains the Same December 18th: * Bladerunner We don't want people spending their family's food money on Blu-ray discs, but if you feel inclined to help the format that your PS3 plays, this week especially and also until the end of the year would be a good time to show support and get some great content in the process. PS3 owners are a big enough group that more owners just buying one or two Blu-ray releases could have a big impact on the overall disc sales and on the future of the Blu-ray format (and thus the future success of the PS3, both for gaming and movies). If you get some titles, make sure to enjoy them. Many of us have found the joy of great Blu-ray movies, concerts, and other content. PS: For those who wish to converse with others who support the Blu-ray movie format, www.blu-ray.com is a great site for this. --- end cut here --- I would probably only add that last part about this place if it was a PS3 or Playstation board, not a general board, but that probably applies to the rest also. --Darin Last edited by darinp2; 10-14-2007 at 05:54 AM. |
