I think of this purchase exactly like that (purchasing a new car). I understand the PS3 is a great Blu-Ray Player. Great engine under the hood, performs like a dream. But to me it looks like a rusty old Gremlin.
Now the Samsung BD-P1400 that a couple of people suggested on this thread... After reading the specs on it, checking it out on Amazon, and reading the manual at samsung.com, I had what I can only describe as a Blu-gasam. This is what I'm looking for. 1.3 HDMI compatibility, ethernet port, ect... Also I've had good experiences with Samsung. My upconverting DVD player (the HD860) was a dream to use.

Of course, the specs don't mean much if it doesn't perform. I mean it clearly has the horsepower under the hood. But, what does that mean when the rubber meets the road? Anyone have any hands on experience with it?

I've had good luck with the sales people demoing this sort of thing for me, but nothing beats personal experience.

Yes, as far as technology & looks it is one of the best standalones if not the best one right now. I wish you the best & if you end up getting it believe me you won't be disappointed.
