Oh - and Wanted 2 is not happening

Quote:
So I have a bit of bad news for you guys: It looks as if the Wanted sequel will not be happening after all. Angelina Jolie pulled out of the project to peruse another film.

That is where the good news comes in: Jolie left Wanted 2 to star in Alfonso Cuarón’s space thriller titled Gravity. Okay, let me give you guys a minute to catch your breath and calm down, I know this is all coming a bit fast — yes, Cuarón, the master filmmaker behind Children of Men, the best movie in the Harry Potter series: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, as well as the classic Y tu mamá también, will be directing a space thriller, written by his 28-year-old son, Jonás (The Shock Doctrine). What’s it about?

According to Vulture, Jolie will play the sole surviving human member of a space mission, desperately trying to return home to Earth. She will be the only actor on screen for most of the movie. Oh, and did I mention that Jolie isn’t along on the ship? Jolie will also be playing her daughter.

Apparently the project was originally set up at Universal with Jolie attached but the studio put the project in turnaround, and it landed at Warner Bros with Harry Potter series producer David Heyman and Legendary Pictures.

Warner Bros is by far the most filmmaker-friendly studio of the modern era. Lets take a look at some of the films this studio has put out in the last few years: James McTeigue’s V for Vendetta, Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, M Night Shymalan’s Lady in the Water, Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain, Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige, Zach Snyder’s 300 , Roland Emmerich’s 10,000 BC, The Wachowski Brothers’ Speed Racer, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla, Michael Dougherty’s Trick r Treat, Zach Snyder’s Watchmen, McG’s Terminator Salvation, Steven Soderbergh’s The Informant, Richard Kelly’s The Box, Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are, and looking forward to Nolan’s Inception and Snyder’s Suckerpunch.

The films listed above are not all home runs: some were critical failures, while other were box office failures. But what all the films have in common is that Warner Bros hired a director they trusted and gave him the artistic freedom to make the film how he wanted (sticking within certain budgetary constraints…etc). This is the reason why a lot of the great filmmakers of today are trying to make movies at Warner Bros — because they support the filmmaker’s vision. And Cuaron is the perfect filmmaker for that kind of environment, and this seems like the perfect challenging yet genre-based project for Legendary to help develop. It should also be mentioned that Legendary Pictures has great track record thus far in the genre film department.

Details are thin on this new project, and I can’t wait to learn more.

The story seems interesting. Kinda reminds me of Ryan Reynolds upcoming movie, I don't remember what its called but he will be the only actor in the film and the story takes off from a coffin (in terms of similarities being the only person acting).

First, what?
Second ... what?

Sounds interesting. Children of Men was a really good movie IMO. I'm not really a fan of Angelina Jolie but if the movie looks good, I'll check it out.

Thanks for the news GreenScar!

I prefer calling it Dusk Watch than Twilight Watch. Because, well, you know... Twilight.

Angelina Jolie isn't doing Gravity either.

Quote:
Universal Pictures has been planning a sequel to Wanted since the first film performed well at the box office, and has been anxious to move things forward. Supposedly the script was already complete and Universal had hoped to start shooting the sequel this year.

However, on Friday New York magazine announced that Angelina Jolie had passed on the project (read our story here), and that consequently Universal was allegedly no longer interested in moving forward with a sequel (though this last part has not yet been confirmed).

Allegedly, Jolie stated that her primary reason for passing on the Wanted sequel was so that she could take a starring role in Alfonso Cuaron's space thriller Gravity, which was previously set up at Universal and has apparently since migrated to Warner Bros.

But now, according to Entertainment Weekly, Jolie's reps state that she has also dropped out of Gravity. According to EW, New York magazine was incorrect in stating that the actress had favored one project over the other, and apparently Warner Bros. told the magazine that it can't confirm whether Gravity is even set up at the studio.

Bottom line: No Wanted 2 or Gravity with Angelina Jolie. And possibly, no Wanted 2, period.

How am I late? I posted it in the right thread. The original post was that she is wasn't doing Wanted 2 for Gravity. Now she isn't doing either.

EXCLUSIVE: Robert Downey Jr. is negotiating a deal to star in Gravity, the 3D space film directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures will co-finance.

Cuaron wrote the script with his son, Jonas.

robert-downey-jr2

Downey will play the leader of a team posted at a remote space station. While he and a female colleague are traveling outside the space station, the other team members are decimated by debris from an exploded satellite.

The script had been developed originally at Universal with the intention of having Angelina Jolie play the female role. Much of the film is devoted to her struggle to get back to Earth and her daughter. Jolie passed around the time Universal cut it loose. Downey was drawn to the chance to work wtih Cuaron, the director of Children of Men and Y tu mama tambien. The actor's starpower gives Warners execs a confidence boost because right now, how many actresses can carry a big sci-fi film themselves, outside of Jolie?

Downey will shoot the film in London this summer, finishing in time to re-team with director Guy Ritchie and Jude Law in the Sherlock Holmes sequel that will shoot early fall, also in London.

Wow, gender switch. It'll be like Robert Downey Jr. in Moon, minus Sam Rockwell.

It looks like Scarlett Johansson will assume the role previously earmarked for Angelina Jolie in the 3D sci-fi flick Gravity. NY Daily News [via Bleeding Cool] reports that Johannson has “verbally agreed” to star opposite Robert Downey Jr. in the film. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men), Gravity follows “a woman as she attempts to make her way back to earth after a satellite crash sets off a chain reaction of further crashes.”

Much of what we have heard about Gravity has more to do with the tech than the narrative: Cuarón is reportedly touting the CG-heavy film as “the most ambitious film, technology-wise, since Avatar,” and it is rumored that the opening scene is a single twenty-minute take. More Gravity details after the break:

alfonso_cuaronThe visual effects company Framestore is working on the film, and at one point posted a wealth of information on their website. It has been taken down, but here’s an excerpt from The Playlist:

The entire film will be made here at Framestore. In effect the film, as Avatar was, is 60% CG feature animation with the balance being hybrid CG and live action elements.

Starring Robert Downey Junior, the film is a contemporary survival thriller that follows a woman as she attempts to make her way back to earth after a satellite crash sets off a chain reaction of further crashes. Because it’s set in space, most shots require every element to float in zero-gravity.

But then factor in that this is a stylish Cuarón flick, directed with his trademark languid feel, and you begin to realise the full scale of our challenge. Cuarón’s long and fluid style (the opening shot alone is slated to last at least 20 minutes) leaves no cut points to hide behind. In short, this is a hybrid of a fully animated, photo-real feature film with a blockbusting visual effects movie.

It all sounds very ambitious, and we may be in store for something special if Cuarón & Co. can pull it off. (And really, is there anyone you’d rather have at the helm for such a project?) Gravity is scheduled to start shooting later this summer with a 2012 release in mind.
