I think the Natal is great conceptually, but I just don't see its value as a game control interface. Its system is actually quite intricate, and it tracks all sorts of things, like ambient noise, temperature, and moisture level (no joke). I can see it being awesome for stuff like sports games (for example, if you were playing a skateboarding game, you can just lean to move around and do gestures for tricks), but I think it's going to be weird trying to play traditional games with it. People are quick to point out that you can use a controller with it, but if you're going to do that, why not just use the controller on its own?

On the other hand, PlayStation®Move seems like a better game controller. Remember when the Wii first came out? It took people years to figure out how to make compelling content with that type of control scheme. Move's advantage is that people can still draw upon that knowledge to create compelling games immediately, since it's so similar to the Wii Remote and Nunchuk—with Wii MotionPlus built in. At the same time, the extra motion tracking can draw upon devs' experience with PlayStation®Eye and Eyetoy games, as well as some Natal titles.

I think that, in the near future, when both things are out, Move is going to get some great content immediately while Natal is going to suffer a dearth of (good) software while people try to figure out what to do with it.

Moisture levels? Why? In the interest of price, some things are better left out.

You'd have to ask MS why, but it does track that. It could be useful for something like a boxing game to track fatigue levels or something.

All to be simultaneously broadcast back to microsoft for datawarehousing and to turn on any camera's necessary in the event something naughty was occuring

Temperature and Moisture sounds like it'd be used for sports/excercise. Though how much you sweat has nothing to do with working out as its really about your heart rate/weight/height/%fat.

I thought he meant ambient temperature and moisture. I suppose there's some use if it measures body temperature and such. But then aren't we getting into infrared cameras and other even more expensive technology (without the use of a hand held measuring device)? I guess this is off-topic though.

Attempting to reliably, accurately do up to full body motion capture, with near-realtime responsiveness, with a single affordable (cheap) camera, without clear markers to track isn't realistic to begin with.

But take it further, you can forget about responsive finger tracking to replace button presses, so extra hand pieces are needed beyond the most basic games for extra inputs. A standard controller's too heavy + lopsided in one hand, doesn't have a hole for a wrist strap and the battery pack could fly off so it's not designed to be used while swinging your arms around separately.

And tracking a whole hand, it's just going to be position, not the way it's rotated which Move can do accurately through internal sensors.

From GiantBomb's video interview:

"Several Bundles" Coming for PlayStation Move
Quote:
At their GDC press conference, Sony announced that they will be selling a bundle consisting of a PlayStation Eye, a PlayStation Move and a motion-controlled game. Kyle Shubel, managing producer at Sony has now clarified what was meant by that stating that there will be "several bundles."

"We are going to have several bundles that encompass the major tiers. For example, if you're looking at SOCOM being a hardcore game, and Eyepet being a family game, and Move party being a social game, those may be the three bundles," said Shubel.

He was quick to note that these were not the exact details regarding the bundles, but that there will be bundles which appeal to different audiences, and no one will be forced to buy a bundled game that they do not like.

Just to add a minor clarification, Natal is actually three cameras, and it does include an infrared sensor, so it can track your body temperature. What it actually does is it first takes body scans of a user and then creates a skeletal tracking frame of him and saves it to his Gamertag. It also uses facial recognition software, so if I were a Natal user and then tomorrow magically gained a lot of weight and/or grew a beard or something, it would no longer recognize me. Again, I think this is an amazing concept. I just don't think it lends itself that well to gaming.

But this thread isn't about Natal anyway. I just wanted to chime in since a few people have been comparing the two motion controllers.

I believe it is just a CMOS camera, near IR light, and IR sensor/camera. Actually, this has been done on the PS Eye with a rigged IR light source and the removal of the IR filter on the PS Eye (depth tracking). See Youtube for videos.

Also, PS Eye has a FULL compliment of facial recognition software already developed and working. It can tell whether you are a child or adult, male or female, etc. All these things can be done on PS Eye...now (see Youtube for videos). It just can't happen in low light situations.

Nothing new to share about Move yet but JT's confident about E3 in general! Looking at all the PS developers that should be ready to announce their next game, I'm not surprised.
