When you play a video from the HDD why does it stop at end and just sit there in pause mode? Would be nice if it would go back to xmb. Is that possible?

Got my 40GB PS3 over the weekend. I am having two issues that I hope someone can help me with:

For the video, I notice that some bonus features like deleted scenes show up letterboxed and stretched to fill my widescreen TV side-to-side. I'm assuming these are really 480i letterboxed. Is there a setting on the PS3 to not have it strech 4:3 items and just leave the black bars on the sides?

For the audio, I have been having no luck with the uncompressed. It sounds terrible--the 5.1 Dolby Digital sounds much richer. The uncompressed is supposed to sound better right? To use this, do I need to change the settings from "Bitstream" to something else on the PS3? (My tuner is an Onkyo TX-DS898, and when I try the uncompressed track, it only shows simple stereo or dolby pro logic II instead of anything fancy. I have tried setting the Digital Format on my tuner to All, DTS and PCM and nothing seems to make a difference.)

EDIT-found my audio answer--apparently you need HDMI for the uncompressed as the optical downmixes to 2.0

If it's stretched wide, that's usually a tv setting in how it handles 480i/p content.

Don't know if it's the new firmware 2.0 or something else... on Ratatouille, when a featurette ends and takes me back to the menu, the background draws, but not the text. If I arrow through the text will pop back up on screen.

Default 60GB vs. 80GB

other than the HDD size and backwards compatability issues, are there any other major diffs between the two models??

I would also assume the 80 gb version would have the latest or most up to date firmware version already installed on it? I only have dial up and getting the firmware updates might be problematic. I found a NIB 60gb version available for sale. I currently do not have any ps2 or 1 games, but given the huge number of the older games I may be leaning to the 60gb version over the 80gb. Any suggestions or opinions??

That's the only difference. If you have a choice, get the 60gb. I don't know the affect it has on games, but I checked up on just Sony's own God of War games, and even these aren't perfect on the 80gb version.

You're going to have to get the updates somehow no matter which PS3 you buy, especially the one that updates it to be functional with profile 1.1 features. I'm sure anyone here would be willing to ship you a cd.

You can download the firmware upgrade at their site and transfer it to your PS3 via Memory Stick. I assume you could also use a USB drive or a CD as well.

Please note, I haven't actually done this, that's what the PS3 docs say.

Yes, using a flash drive, a memory card, or a CD-RW (don't waste a CD) works so long as you follow the file folder rule (PS3->UPDATE) where you put the update in.

Amazon.com or any of the international Amazon sites don't ship overseas for consoles, accessories and games.

I am sure it has to do with the classification of the device. It can carry out too many processes so it is restricted. And I am sure any company selling them for overseas sales could find themselves being served with a FISA warrant. But then again under that law they would not even know it was issued until they were served with an arrest warrant.

So to be so gloom about it but your best bet is to try to get one from Japan or Australia.

That is pretty insane. Hmmm... I'm off to Japan on February so I might just pick it up there duty free. Will I be arrested or something? Heh. Anybody owns a Japanese player and know if they are english friendly?

Thanks for the input guys. It just gets very frustrating because I'm missing out on releases like The Lives of Others because they're region coded.

The Ps3 is the best player out there. It can perform as well as any Blu-ray stand alone. It also plays video games surfs the web and stores mp3s. Why twould you buy any other Blu-ray player.

I have to disagree with that. The samsung 1200 has the Silicon Optix Reon HQV chip. It blows the ps3 away in the upconversion of standard dvd's. I will give credit to the ps3's ability to play alot of titles trouble free. The ps3 also has excellant firmware support.

Question, I have had a PS3 since they came out but have had it in a set up where I have always had a stand alond (Sammy 1000, 1400) I just replaced the 1400 with a Panasonic BD30. I have always used the PS3 for games only. My question is, how does the PS3 do as far as Upconversion of Standard dvd's? I have 400 + , I just got the BD30 and that is getting a lot of mixed reviews on upconversion, than I just read the post above about the PS3. Would I be better off playing standard dvds in the BD30 or PS3 or are they about the same? thanks for any input

Upconverting is a crock. You arent getting any better resolution from doing it. If you where then there would be no reason to have Blu-ray in the first place. As far as Blu-ray playback the ps3 is as good as any other player
