Actually I was going to see if my dealer would let me upgrade to the 100's V5 including my cc690. Kind of thinking of going to an all black front sound stage. This way if I go all black then I'll never have to go back.

Just tossing the idea around in my head...not sure if they would even do that...Ryan any thoughts since you're a dealer?

I have heard many speakers, and for the money, I would take any of these over anything else I have heard. I have not heard the Studio 100s, but I would venture to say that these speakers, esp the Dyns would really peak your intrests. Totem is built in Canada, so that shouldn't be a difficult find for you up there. Dynaudio may be a little more of a tough find, but they are very neutral, and they are honest. Honest to the point that some people find them too revealing. If you have a bad source or a bad recording... its gonna let you know.
callas01 how did the Forrests compare to the Hawks? Those are two I plan on doing a side by side demo this summer. The Totem Rep told me the Sttafs are probably their best speaker for the dollar but I still really want to hear the Forrests.

As for Paradigm and speaker demoing for my taste I still haven't found anything I like better at their price point and I've heard quite a few in good listening environments(home setups and local shops).

One thing I will say about the Studio 100's is that they will also bring out the worst of bad recordings. With alot of mp3 files and even some CD's I never noticed how bad they were recorded until I played them on my current setup but these boys will shine with a well recorded track!! Even more with a DTS-HDMA or Dolby TRUE-HD movie which is what our main use is Studio owners know what I'm talkin about!! Most times speaker demoing really makes me love what I got even more..

I couldn't agree more. In fact, I was doing some track by track listening of a few 90's rock songs today, of which I had in lossless form as well as mp3. And weirdly enough the MP3 was more enjoyable because I could'nt hear all the flaws.

Tom Petty, Wildflowers (in lossless) is a nice light track and really can show off the soundstage of the 100s.

And I discovered today (as I did when owned Monitor 7v2 and my beloved PW2200 6 years ago) I much prefer my music without the my Sub12. It simply adds so much bottom end that I feel I lose out on the separation and beauty of the 2 channels. Now my room is brutal, and when I finish the basement and do some proper room treatments, then we'll see if I can blend the sub in for music.

But man do I love that sub for movies...

Have you used the PBK on your Sub 12? I found using that really helped blend my sub with everything else. It really helped seeing the in room response of the sub, a fair bit of repositioning is required which is not easy with my 105 pound sub. Once the perfect spot is found it blends very well. What crossover are you using? I go back and forth between 80-100 hz when I'm pushing it and 50hz for average music levels. The higher crossover point is used right to help out my receiver which starts to struggle at spirited levels.

didn't get to hear the forests... buy i know the dealer said they use dynaudio drivers and are more refined and better mid-range, but he also pushed the Sttafs more then the others as the price-performance was best.

Well this guy made a wrong statement the Forest does not use a Dynaudio driver. It uses a cnadian made ATI very look alike Dynaudio it uses 12 screws on a 6.5 inch vs 6 screws for Dynaudio 6.5 and 5.5 inches drivers..

Mani 2, Model One and The Wind (the 2 5.5 inch Mid bass drivers) are using Dynaudio drivers in their construction.

Maybe because that's a great price. What would you use them for though?

I have an idea...sell your Studio 100s v4 to GAWD because that's what he's looking for to match his 590 v4 center. Then you can get the Studio 60s. Win/win.

The Forrest is what will be the closest match to the Sttaf in terms of tonal nuance. I would tell you that the Forrest will be smoother than the Hawk and bit more linear but it does not really qualify as beeing linear it's just to dynamic for it to be. Both the Hawk and Forrest have amazing bass extension and tremendous detail. Both speaker image really good and offer amazing staging.
It's hard to explain but it all comes down to your preference.

I would lean more towards the Forrest but that's my personal choice.

Your Dealer is right though the Sttaf offers uncomoparable value and really is top notch versatile speaker and a lot more forgiving then the Forrest or the Hawk. Very serious gear is required for the Forrest. Amperage is the key they can take a whole lot more wattage than what is stated on the totem web site.

Hopefully my ears can pick up all this stuff. I'm not good at describing sounds I just know what i like when I hear it . I'll be in the city again early August so hopefully finally get some good time at the shop.
