I saw the film in the theater twice and can remember how it looked. Directors do purposely revise their films after the fact. Witness George Lucas' DVD releases of Star Wars, which differ from the originals strongly in color palette as well as in content. It is not always simply a case of the director knows best. I have no objection to directors' cuts and recolor timing, as long as I have the opportunity to recreate the theatrical experience on my home theater system. Ridley Scott's own release of Legend is a good example of this: one disc with the US theatrical cut; the other with the director's cut. Watch them both and you will see two different color palettes: the original and the revised. I appreciate both, and I want to see both.

But you do realize theatrical edits/prints are made against pre-set deadlines that are usually hard as hell to move, right?, so what you saw in the theaters may not have represented the director's "final say"...home video gives high profile directors the chance to "lock in" exactly what they intended all along...

Yes.

It does, and Bladerunner is a good example of this, but it also gives them the opportunity to revise their films entirely, and not always in a way that leads to the re-establishment of original visions thwarted by studios, deadlines and circumstances. Read Kaminski's The Secret History of Star Wars, which argues convincingly that Lucas never, as he claims, had a vision of the films in his head all along: he made it up as he went along. Lucas is an extreme case, but I do not always believe that what directors create years after fact represents what they had in mind all along.

Has anyone received an email back from them regarding the Gladiator blu-ray replacement program?

From the Digital Bits:

First, for those of you trying to get a hold of Paramount's customer service to arrange your Gladiator BD swap, the phone number is still working but they're pretty overloaded so they would prefer people e-mail them (phe_customerservice@paramount.com) to setup the exchange.
In plain English: email them and be extremely patient as a response may take a long while to happen.

You do realize that in many, many cases, the film print you saw in the theater may not have been "correct"?

Although, come to think of it, she only saw it back when I purchased the theatrical cut on DVD.

See, I don't remember the film being that blue in my recollections, though I'm certainly open to my mis-rememberance.

I just know that currently the colors/DNR/EE look wrong and processed to me, so I look forward to the replacement.

Memory can change the shape of a room; it can change the color of a car. And memories can be distorted. They're just an interpretation, they're not a record, and they're irrelevant if you have the facts.

Yeah, I got you, but until folks start giving visual proof, my point is that just because one person says they remember it so doesn't make it so.

Just called there. They're looking for some information from the packaging, so make sure you don't waste your time (and theirs) calling without it.

I'll be calling when I get home.

Thanks for the update #.

So i think we can stop the color discussion now.
What else did he change and approve?

Either is the PQ on the current release on a 50" or less HDTV sitting at 10+ feet viewing distance.
