I suspect most people have known for a while that CES 2008 is going to be a milestone of sorts that gives us all some kind of indicator of which way this mess is going to possibly fall out.
For me, it's really very simple: If Warner defies precedent as a quasi HD-DVD supporter as I view them to this day and goes all Blu, then it truly is a shocker of a lifetime and for my money, essentially ends the format war on the spot. There's no way HD-DVD will survive with only Paramount and suspect Universal support. On the other hand, Stringer's "stalemate" comments become gospel fact if Warner abandons what I feel has been a pretense and returns to their original status as a full HD-DVD supporter. And that point, it becomes a Microsoft victory all the way because the HDM market will be hoplessly split with no clear end in sight. CES 2008 will be one for the books. I think we've all known that for a while. |

Oops. My bad. You are right. And not a many companies would be willing to give 1 million. But still with 170+ companies for support I am sure they can beat or at least match anything the HD DVD camp throws at them.

Paramount made their deal, they got their $150 to go down with the ship. Good for them. In all this the funniest thing is that Universal, the only HD DVD holdout for the longest time, may have played this game of chess in the worst possible fashion... |

Remember the other rumor--that Universal people had been seen scouting out Blu-ray manufacturing facilities. Hmmm. Maybe not so much a rumor afterall. ![]() -Greg |

That's a good point about Universal really... but they still have one last shot don't they.. if they at least go Neutral now, that semi-effectively ends the war as well, they steal WB's thunder and get to be the heroes (perhaps by announcing Heroes on Blu? lol)... and possibly can get concessions out of the BDA for doing so. Win-Win-Win situation.

That's the key, they could go Blu-ray exclusive, they could remain neutral, but all indications are they certainly won't go HD-DVD exclusive.

Probably also one of the reasons why Uni is mostly caughing up catalog titles, and most importantly, FAR less titles than they promised HD DVD in the first place.

We don't want uni to switch too fast. They need some time to do better encodes of their movies for BR, remaster with DTS-MA etc...

Indeed. Business week is no SA0CD. Plus with the added hint drops for Penton on Warner as well as Universal, I'd say I'm liking where this is potentially heading.

I just can't rejoice too fast, for my own sanity in case it just doesn't happen.
But I think the interview of a Warner exec talking about them dropping T -HD due to retailer pressure (wanting only a given amount of shelf space) made me hope for a rapid resolution instead of dragging this on. In the end, it's all about $$ per square inch of shelf, and in most reported cases I think Blu Ray has spoken... Universal and Paramount are facing the same problem (Universal has strong ties with MS though, but their recent clash with Apple might have made them realize you do not want to totally depend on 1 online provider in the long run I think). How to maximize sales, and please their retailers? Right now, the split can't possibly be good for biz, and we all know that Warner going back to HD DVD would only reinforce the split and possibly stall things. |

More good news, watch for promotions at the major retailers next week... Thanks to all for your patience... |
