Now, lets say Randy Moss is WB. After this year he is a free agent. New England isn't going to pay him like he's the best receiver in the game to keep him next year. So, If I'm Randy Moss, do I go play for a crappy team (HD) and pay me to make me the highest paid player? Or do I look at the potential to win another superbowl (format war) and sign with New England for a little less because they have the best chance to win the game?
I'd say that's far more applicable to Universal, if he were playing on a midrange team

80K or so HD DVD players sold in 2006, assuming 120K shipped, that would mean about 550K units sold in 2007. Compare that to the 1 million projection (down from 1.8 million, down from 2.5-3.0 million).

Still, these are small numbers, and Blu-ray isn't blowing HD DVD away in North America.

Not yet. They are blowing out HD-DVD in other parts of the world though. Last I checked, weren't there some countries where you couldn't even find HD-DVD if you wanted to?

Worldwide perspective is very important to remember here.

However, we don't know what other tricks HD has up their sleeve late in the 4q to pull off the upset. That is what keeps me on my toes and keeps me from totally thinking this game is already over as some of you have already presumed.
I dont think anyone is saying bam, its over. But i think people are just confused by your desire to go out of the way to play teh doom and gloom role. Be cautiously optimistic for sure........but ALL SIGNS point favorably towards BD.....so i think many people here, including myself wonder why you seem so intent on channeling your energy into the least likely scenerio and then multiply the worry for no reason.

No one is saying to sell your house and buy Sony stock with it, but to be this cold and cloudy at this point seems a bit unnecessary, thats all.

There will be no formal surrender ceremony

HD DVD will just slowly vanish over a year or more

Are the RCA and Toshiba first gen hd dvd players counted as sold even if they are still collecting dust on local Wally World shelves?

If Paramount and Universal (as well as Warner) drop HD DVD I think we could call that a definitive end.

If they keep releasing a few titles on HD DVD then it will be like UMD where Sony continues to release titles so it is not really totally dead.

Interestingly enough, UMD movies are still released in Japan, with the new Harry Potter and 300 being upcoming/recent releases. The world is a funny place sometimes

Agreed. Though I think the day Toshiba announces a combo player can be considered the official/formal end of "hostile actions". That day is going to be a real laugher...

If Warner goes blue exclusive, that is effectively the end. Even more so if Universal goes neutral in addition to the Warner move.

I think he was referring to when WB went Neutral from Red.

The game isn't over until Warner makes the move. And yes, any backroom shady dealings can happen. However, the silver lining is that Warner is probably the studio that is least likely to take the cash grab.

The BDA has matched and surpassed everything HD DVD has thrown @ it, including dumping hardware.. We've got a BD SAL @ 300 bucks right now... They are definately pushing..

If Warner goes Red, well, that's just the way things go. However, I don't see much else the BDA can do to make its case. It's made it in sales, in marketing, its going to meet Warner's interactivity desires shortly.

What else can the BDA do?

Good question. The stats are all "shipped" which isn't at all interesting. Although we already know what overshipment means for HD DVD: A firesale clearance.

And, I believe the studios are increasingly having to think about a world view. And if they want China and region to ever be anything but a piracy mecca, Blu-ray is the only option currently out there for establishing a legitimate disc market in region C.

But, lets face it, the entire HD DVD plan right now is that they fight for the win in America and then expect the world to tag along with the result. It's the "world doesn't matter" attitude.

Appalling arrogance and short sightedness, among other things.

Default blu-ray sales a bit below HD-DVD on amazon

HD-DVD has been selling better on amazon over the last few days. Lets up it a notch and make sure Blu-ray has another winning week. Thanks to all those blu-ray supporters!

One thing I noticed is that a lot of people done like preordering titles. They like ordering the movies the week they come out.

This week is huge with the Harry Potters and Lost coming out, so you will see a drastice increase in sales for Blu Ray starting tomorrow.

I think this is a direct result of Amazon's 12 free HD-DVD movies with the purchase of an HD DUD player deal. The ratio will be in Blu's favor everywhere else.
