Hey Roach stop the FUD - at the time of 300 sales week 2 and week 3 there were NO 3rd generation HDDVD players for sale nor it was known that Toshiba will include these in the future boxes. For your information A3 (and other 3rd gen) was launched Oct 1st - see http://formatwarcentral.com/index.ph...hd-a30-hd-a35/
And I remember they were not widely available in the stores even that first week of Oct. Also none of the gen 3 players moved any numbers until BF - the only exeption was the week where A2 was $98 in Walmart and Best Buy matched with A3. Contrast this with the SM3 where SONY openly said it will be included in the packaging in the product that sells >100 000 per week. Just realize that the Blu install base is much larger and diversified and not everybody runs to buy titles the first week these are released - thats why you see such strong residuals on Blu. |

are you saying, blu-ray is surging or hd dvd is surging, because i would guess if HP was 1.3:1 + HD DVD had Bourne + HD DVD had a BOGO and blu-ray still won 61:39 that blu-ray had a lot of surges in old titles like POTC, 300, and CR. PE just keeps selling though for HD DVD, I don't get it with that title.

Whenever you talk about or compare absolute numbers, one must keep in context the tracking source. DV was refering to a specific tracking source in regards to the numbers he reported. That way everything is "apples to apples".

I would normally agree for any other title but not Planet Earth. The sharp uptick for the HD-DVD version after Oprah recommendation can not be explained by HD-DVD player sales. Now Superman and Batman - a whole different story but I really want to see the rate of returns for Planet Earth - reading funny reviews all over the net how this title doesn't play in people's DVD players and how they were tricked assures me that it is not any indication of player sales but of peoples confusion. Actually if this title was a Combo it would have being positive for HD-DVD camp since atleast customers will not be pissed when they can play onse side and may even be interesed in getting a player for the HD side but the way it is now it is more of a black eye for the whole format war.

Does my purchase count as a week ending 12-16 or 12-23? thanks |

I don't know about the rest of you but I did't buy HP box set because I couldn't find it. It was sold out everywhere I went.

Look folks, Warner Bros. knows that if they go HD DVD exclusive, it would guarantee that HDM remains a nche format. The studios would then be evenly split. However, everyone knows that if they choose Blu-ray it is only a matter of time before the other studios wave the white flag and Toshiba asks Sony politely if they could produce a Blu-ray player. There are simply too many manufacturers, artists, studios and consumers on the Blu-ray side to go HD DVD exclusive. They will either remain neutral or become the saviors of high definition media. The Harry Potter franchise is not gonna decide this. Long-term profits will be their only consideration.

I don't think they "delay" it so much. I think if they announce blu only in a couple of weeks, the media will portray them as "bloodsuckers" asking people to spend $110 for HP boxsets, etc for a format they know will be done with in a couple of weeks. They come off better if they Announce they believe blu will win and start to phase out Red, not just let it hit the wall like Paramount did. They don't want to come off as the ones who "DECIDED THE WAR" much the same as Lucas is awaiting an outcome before releasing Star Wars. If they announce what they prefer (BLU), then retailers, manufactoers, will take notice and fall in line as well.

Whether they go Blu at CES in a few weeks, or in 6 months, there will be HD-DVD and Sony haters bombing WB with calls and emails, as well as spamming the hell out of message boards everywhere. So they might as well do it now, because the end result will be the same. Last edited by DetroitSportsFan; 12-20-2007 at 06:16 PM. |

For the millionth time to all those who don't understand the difference between VS numbers (the ones DV sees) versus actuals (which few people, only the studios really, have access to), VS captures 50-60% of the market. So when he says VideoScan has title X at 55,000, roughly double that, and you're close to the totals.
For example, for Pirates - Yes, he said it sold under 6 figures, and in the end it turned it sold 160,000. But he clearly stated (even before the 160,000 figure came out) that it was just the VideoScan numbers that had it under 6 figures, and he threw in that VS also had Transformers, Die Hard, and Spiderman all under 100K as well but he was sure all those actually did sell at least 100K. He's just quoting VS numbers, which are only useful as a benchmark. |
