PS3 not displaying picture

Hi everyone I have been lurking here for a while just reading and now I have a question. I have a Samsung LN-S3251D LCD tv and I have been running the PS3 fine off the standard A/V cables with both good audio and picture. Today I bought the PS3 HDMI cable and hooked it up to my tv, now the problem that has me really frustrated is that I only have audio, no video with the PS3 hooked up. The tv senses the HDMI cable and puts itself into HDMI mode and I only get the audio. I know I need to set the PS3 to a higher res by working through the settings, but I shouldn't I get at least a 480i default picture so I can update the setting? As of now I just get the audio, unless I disconnect the HDMI and go back to the standard A/V where it works fine.

Sorry for the rambling but I am very frustrated after spending this $$ and now this problem! Thanks for the help.
