I hadn't read the books before watching the show, and it definitely took me a few episodes to figure out who everyone was! It's totally worth it though.

I think he will finish both books before he dies(hopefully). I read an interview where GRRM said he starting writing WoW after he was done with DwD.

I am about to finish the second book(only took 10 days)and move right into the 3rd. I honestly think reading the books makes watching the show so much better because there is story that they couldn't fill into the show or each season would run like 25+ episodes. Finishing the 3rd I don't get how they are fitting everything into 10 episodes. I hope they did a good job.

Do they create their own version of the final book from the outline while GRRM continues to work on the real ending?

Perhaps a better question is who do I have to bribe to get the outline?
Seeing how there is a show now I think that it's going to put a fire under GRRM's butt to get the books done quick but still put out something great and worth reading.

If they do end up doing every single book. And if they do end up doing the rest of the books with 2 seasons each. GRRM has 8 years to put out the last two books. I think 4 years a book is more than enough time. Like I said in the above reply he said he started WoW after he finished DwD so somethings got him going. Lets just hope GRRM doesn't die like

before he's done and take all his secrets to the grave with him. Then I'll really be pissed.

I know DwD took a while but now he has a lot of motivation he didn't have before. With a hell of a lot more fans into GoT because of the show. Peter Dinklage winning an Emmy. There is a lot of buzz about the show that there wasn't for the first season. I wouldn't be surprised if the second seasons ratings double from the first.

I don't see how a stupid show about dumb girls in a school beat GoT in best new TV Drama at the People's Choice Awards. But if you read the last sentence in my signature said so eloquently by Gremel it really doesn't surprise me.

You could always rent, or watch when it re-airs on tv, prior to buying. Just to make sure it's something you like.

Once you get a feel for who they are, and see their personalities develop more fully, the show becomes addictive. But again, going into the series blind, it could be a tad confusing at first and take a few episodes to click. All IMO of course.
It was confusing trying to figure out who's who. Again, it was just the first episode.

Guys, help me. Help me resist Season One for the eventual series box set down the road.

I'm at a fever pitch right now and I just know when that series box set comes out, I'm going to want to own the hell out of it....and I'll feel guilty about owning the individual seasons.

By the time the full series box set arrives the machines will have taken over or, even worse, BD might be superseded. I'd go with the season releases

It always amuses me when new readers have high hopes GRRM will finish these next 2 books quickly. On contrary what you say he said he would start on the new book this month, although he has some leftovers from the last book (150 Manuscript-pages I believe). It's pretty clear he has huge problems writing since 2000 when he finished book 3: he knew from the get go what the story would be the first 3 books and since 2000 he had to come up with new material what has only resulted to 2 books in 11 years. And even though the first 3 books were published in 4 years, he did start writing them in 1991. The man is just a slow writer and even said that if all goes well he could finish book 6 in 3-3,5 years. So if all goes well he could finish the next 2 books in 7 years, but longtime readers of his blog all know very well things rarely go well when we're talking about GRRM and deadlines.

The book series won't ever be finished. How many 300lb 70 year olds do you see kicking around? That's how old he'd be if he were to finish the last two in 6 or 7 years (which is an overly generous timeframe considering the pace he's moving at now.) Brandon Sanderson will have to be shipped in to finish the final book. He seems to dig doing that.

Picked up the sampler today on lunch, can't wait to get home and give this a shot....for $0.01 it was worth the effort to go to BB. I've read most of the books, so I'm curious to see how this translated. As far as whether GRRM will finish....who really knows, but with how DWD and AFFC went.... the story really needs to get moving again or it'll be another Wheel of Time....

I'm not really into fantasy stuff for the most part (for example I have only seen 1 of the LOTR movies) but this show was excellent.

I started the first book a month before the show started and only started the second recently and will finish it tomorrow. I guess that still makes me a new reader. But even still I rather be a new reader; with excitement than a old reader who is depressed.

I still have hope he will finish the books in time. I'm in no rush. I was planning on read each book before each seasoned started so I have a ways to go. Even thought I'll start the 3rd soon.

I envy your hope and enthusiasm. Reading my post back I do sound as depressed fan, but that's what one becomes after years and years of waiting, waiting and in the end getting insulted by the writer himself.

How is the content of the episodes? I would suspect it to be pretty tame given the fantasy background but it is HBO, is there a lot of excessive nudity or language?
