It would also be a pretty disjointed show in terms of dramatic pacing. As long as the showrunners stay true to the spirit of the characters and the world I think it'll turn out great.
They've already said that if they get picked up for SoS that it will be two seasons. If the show lasts(which I hope it does) I don't see why they wouldn't do the same for those two. I hope this show lasts all the way to the end.

This season should have been split into two seasons or they should have at least of added 5 episodes. There is a hell of a lot to cover in CoK.

Anyways back on topic. I will definitely be getting the Targaryan one.

I was thinking similarly. Even though I'm not concerned with how it would look on my shelf, I was thinking about just getting the regular packaging because I don't want season 1 to be the only one with special packaging.

Nevermind, someone already posted about the exclusive covers.

I can't stand what they did with the True Blood packaging either! I really thought they'd alternate spines like the Monk DVD sets did. Instead, season 1 stands out horribly. I wish studios would realize that people like continuity/uniformity with their sets.

I don't think you're going to be disappointed, there's still 2 more books to be written and HBO has said they've already been given the entire outline so they can finish the show in case GRRM can't out of apathy/death by ham sandwich/any other reason

Well I suppose you could pick up all 3 versions of season 1 and use the shells for season 2 and 3. Crazy? Yes. Will people do it? Probably.

Can you get the sampler at Best Buy by preordering the first season, or do you need to buy another HBO set, like Boardwalk Empire or others? Anyway, I'm leaning toward the Stark cover, but I also would like the regular one.

The real problem comes if the catch up with the author but he survives the ham sandwich. There was a long wait for book 5 and even if we assume book 6 will arrive before HBO can telecast the remaining four books there is no way book 7 will be done. What do they do then? Do they create their own version of the final book from the outline while GRRM continues to work on the real ending?

Perhaps a better question is who do I have to bribe to get the outline?

If you check the thread I posted here, you will see multiple instances (including mine) of getting the Game of Thrones Blu-ray Sampler from Best Buy for $0.01 without buying any HBO series. It rings up as $0.01 and that is what you pay. I just watched it tonight and it looks and sounds awesome!

It wouldn't hurt to buy something else along with it so it doesn't stick out that you are only paying them $0.01, but that is up to you.

Haha, I'm sure that's in a vault somewhere.

The point being is GRRM already has the ending to the series done and has given that to the producers at HBO. Now how long he takes to flesh that ending out and get it into proper narrative and published is anyones guess. Basically there's a contingincy plan in place in case something happens and the books don't get finished so HBO can't just go "oh the whole show is just what some autistic kid dreamed up while he stared at a snow-globe".

I understand the complaint, but at least all of the spines match perfectly besides the colors.

I'm sure Boardwalk Empire will suffer the same fate as well since there is artwork behind the title on the spine that faces out.

I just watched the first episode on the sampler. I am mixed on it. It was ok. I wasn't bored but I wasn't thrilled. I know nothing about the books. Now, I'm torn on buying season 1 when it comes out.

It gets much, much better as the series goes on.

I'm mystified that anyone couldn't be sucked in after watching the pilot, but yes - the show gets better and better as it goes on.

I think you're kidding yourself if you think that even the 'standard' packaging is going to remain consistent for the entire series run.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that there won't be consistent packaging for this... you're talking years and years of wait time. That's too much time, too many variables, and too much turnover in marketing/art departments. And there's even precident within HBO's own releases for this inconsistent approach (Six Feet Under).

Buy what you want and don't let the OCD kick in too much, because HBO muck that up for you anyway, unless you do custom packaging or wait a decade for the complete set.

Eh, it's just my way of balancing the scale since I know a couple others on this board also had issues with the first couple episodes. I just happen to think it was firing on all cylinders from the start.

This could indeed be their new Sopranos and no one should miss out on the ride.
I hope to all that is holy that you're correct. But you're talking to someone who was a fan of Carnivale and Deadwood... so I'm always on edge with HBO. Sometimes what they decide to cancel (and when they make that decision) is troubling.

I think Game of Thrones may be one of (if not the) best single season in television history -- no joke. But I'm not yet ready to declare that the entire series of novels is safe and on its way to the small screen...

Just to add to what others have said... The show has a HUGE cast of characters, and there's no single, central "hero" to the story. It's a complete ensemble. If you're unfamiliar with the novels (as you said you are), then it will undoubtedly take a few episodes to figure out who everybody is and how they relate to each other. Once you get a feel for who they are, and see their personalities develop more fully, the show becomes addictive. But again, going into the series blind, it could be a tad confusing at first and take a few episodes to click. All IMO of course.
