Those Best Buy covers are just goregous. Too much to hope that they might have the exclusive packaging, AND the extra disc that so many retailers here in the UK are getting?

They are very nice, but I definitely want the regular edition since
[Show spoiler] it's the only season that will feature Sean Bean (and I really do love that image of him on the throne).

I will get the Stark family edition at Best Buy for sure. Love the white cover.

As for the seasons. Yes some of the other books, especially the third and fifth are a little bit longer than the others. But I doubt they will extend it that long. I could see them doing 7 seasons. And for the ones that are longer books, just make them more episodes, 14 or so instead of just 10. It would be much more effective than having an entire new season.

Game of Thrones is growing in popularity, I could easily see it go to 7 seasons one for each book.

Exactly; the fandom is huge and was one of the reasons why HBO was interested in the series in the first place. Game of Thrones is HBO's biggest new show right now, one of its biggest draws, and they will want to keep hold of it. After all, HBO execs did state that they'll keep making seasons as long as GRR keeps on writing. I can see this epic series continuing for a long, long time.

Season 03 - A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 3: A Storm of Swords
Season 04 - A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 3: A Storm of Swords
Season 05 - A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 4: A Feast for Crows
Season 06 - A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 5: A Dance With Dragons
Season 07 - A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 5: A Dance With Dragons

As of yet we don't know how long the final two books will be, but my guess for the Book - Series format, it'll be something like:

Season 08 - A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 6: The Winds of Winter
Season 09 - A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 7: A Dream of Spring
Season 10 - A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 7: A Dream of Spring

It'd be great to have ten perfect seasons telling the complete story of George R.R. Martin. And, would allow for ten years of great television too. The only issue would be the ageing factor. However, the ages of the characters in the series are significantly different than in the books, so I guess it won't be much of a problem. They can work it into the great writing somehow.
It's been suggested that A Feast of Crows and A Dance With Dragons will be combined into one piece that will be told over two or three seasons. This is an attempt to get around the structure issue that only has certain characters appearing in AFoC, then the rest being in the first 2/3 of ADWD.

This is why I'm conflicted about getting this first season. Everything is so up in the air as to how HBO finishes this series because the last two books aren't finished.

I really want to get season one right now but there's a chance that I might have to wait a DECADE to get a complete series box set for this...and I already know in my heart of hearts that I want the complete series box set, instead of individual seasons on the shelf.

Not to mention, it would crush me dearly if this show was cancelled without a proper finale.

After one season, it's the best on HBO since the Sopranos.

What to do?

I wouldn't worry about the show running for 10 years. Even huge HBO shows often only get 6, maybe 7. The budget for this one will be incredible by the 3rd and 4th books, it has a built-in fanbase but I don't know if it's enough to carry it for a decade.

If it does, to quote Marlo Stanfield, "Sounds like one of them good problems".

Believe me I'd love to be wrong. This is my favorite book series.

If HBO gets as far as a fifth season (ASOS will be split), AFFC and ADWD will most certainly be combined. And I do feel these books could be edited heavily to take up just 1, maybe 1,5 season.

Yeah, well the shows that ran for 6-7 seasons weren't cancelled - they were allowed to end on the writers' and creators' own terms; that's completely different. For a TV network, HBO is renowned for giving their shows the most time even regardless of ratings as it is a subscription network first & foremost (and of course, there are a few exceptions but this is largely the case), especially if it garners a lot of interest, and for a massively popular series for Game of Thrones, that will never be a problem. This could indeed be their new Sopranos and no one should miss out on the ride.

So, as I'd surmised earlier by talking with Best Buy representatives, they were saving the Game of Thrones Blu-Ray samplers for the Boardwalk Empire release (which, interestingly enough, they had more in stock of than the DVD samplers). Walked in and got it with the Boardwalk set (which I got for $30 with the Upgrade & Save coupon, a fantastic price for a brand new HBO Blu-Ray boxset), easy as pie.

And my, having a look at the Blu itself, it is absolutely stunning! Unlike before, you can now actually see each speck of grime on the wall, every splatter of blood (perhaps even the blood cells), the fire's labyrinth, and about every bit of detail you can think of.

Short story cut even shorter: you're missing out on quite a bit if you don't check this series out on Blu; it is a remarkably beautiful show and Blu-Ray brings it to life, literally.

Feast and Dance will definitely be combined into 1 season but I think that they won't stay too close to the books at that point. I enjoyed those books but they won't make for thrilling tv if they tried to film them faithfully. With the amount of characters and locations alone it's enough of a reason to trim it as it will be too expensive to include all of it. It would also be a pretty disjointed show in terms of dramatic pacing. As long as the showrunners stay true to the spirit of the characters and the world I think it'll turn out great.

Generally, the only time HBO wavers on loyalty is in the face of expense. The first season was expensive and there werent any large set pieces. Season two with a huge battle scene has to cost more. There will also be major CGI costs as the series continues. I just hope HBO sides with the fans and not the accountants this time.

Yeah, HBO keeps things around so long as they don't take too much of a toll on the coffers. I'm pretty sure the cast of bored to death was paid in sandwiches and beer.... and didn't that just get cancelled a couple weeks ago? Game of Thrones definitely falls firmly into the "very expensive" category as far as HBO is concerned... luckily its ratings are good so it shouldn't matter so long as people continue to watch

Deadwood was axed was before its time - too expensive and too few viewers (which sucks - it was one of my favorite shows of all time).

Rome was axed because of it's cost. They told Bruno Heller before they shot season two that it was over so ratings were never a consideration. That's why season two is so disjointed. Heller tried to pack everything he had planned for two and three into ten episodes.

I was aiming for the Stark but now thinking the other. Logic is that in case BB (or someone else) doesn't do special covers for future seasons it could end up being grey spine and then black for the rest of them. Sound petty I know but it it already pains me looking at the True Blood sets on my shelf so think it would pain me even more for this being my favourite show.

What is on the sampler I got my BR of Boardwalk on blu and they never gave it to me. So is it just stuff from the first season or second?
