I hope so. The book was great.

I'm also willing to give that "Cloud Atlas" film a try. I have confidence that the Watchowskis handle sci-fi quite well.

Between "John Carter," "The Hunger Games," "CA," "Prometheus," "Looper," "Dredd," and the "Total Recall" remake, I was thinking this was not a bad year for sci-fi. Problem is, I've only seen a few of those, so I could be way off.

Errrmm, I don't know. Since getting a region-free player, I stopped worrying about it.

If it's Universal, it should be.

They should make a 4-movie adaptation of Hyperion - Dan Simmons.

Other dreams would include an adaptation of the Vorkosigan series.

Lord knows there are loads of sci-fi books that I felt should be movies. The ones that come to my head now are "Childhood's End," "Stranger in a Strange Land," "Gateway," "The Forever War," "The Time Ships," and maybe "Ubik."

Don't forget Tom Tykwer who made Run Lola Run. I think he's the perfect man for the job after seeing that movie.

Prometheus is good, and Cloud Atlas and Dredd have been getting some positive word-of-mouth, so it could be a decent year for sci-fi.

I just wish they'd go back to using practical effects like in Blade Runner, 2001, and the original Star Wars. Most of the movies right now already look dated the day they hit theaters. Too much reliance on fake-looking CGI nowadays.

Oh, wait, I already did.

Sci-fi overall needs a boost in quality. Granted that we have gotten some decent flicks in this decade, nothing feels all that deep anymore, and we certainly have never had anything that can match up with a proper sci-fi novel.
I saw Blade Runner for the first time a couple of years ago and didn't like it much, but I'm considering giving it another shot.

Serenity, Star Trek (2009), Dark City, Prometheus, and Super 8 are a few that come to mind.

I would also list The Island and Tron Legacy, but that wouldn't go over well.

Watched Total Recall and Bourne Legacy.

Bourne...yea...I was bored the entire time. Do not attempt unless you like the rest of the series...in that case, you will likely enjoy it.

Recall...if you can't help but compare remakes to originals (which, actually, this is not a remake) and liked the original Total Recall, pass on this one. For me, it was good fun for two hours. Plus...
[Show spoiler]

I can safely recommend it to Al out of our group of regulars.

:

Every time I see/hear/read about remakes, and whether they are good or not, or should even be made or not, I always think of this.

Dusty Springfield, (RIP) a famous British Female Solo Pop Artist released "I only Wanna Be With You" in 1963. Its a silly Pop Rock Happy tune.

Give a listen here....

Volbeat, an awesome Danish hard rock band, (with influences from Elvis, Johhny Cash and Metalica; OH MY) redid the song in 2011.

Listen here.

That's almost as far as you can get from each other stylistically

...now I want to see the video of her singing it with the audio of the Danish band singing it

A local craft brewery (Toronto Amsterdam Brewery) hosts a weekly open roof film festival, and tonight they screened Moonrise Kingdom. I must say, sitting under the night sky, traffic whizzing near by, a beer in my hand, watching an art house film with hundreds of others, was a great experience. The film was better than I had expected. In fact, it's very stilted approach was very true to life. Recommended!

Default A Movie A Day: Day 118

High Fidelity (2000)
O.M.F.G... I f*cking LOVE this movie. Love the soundtrack, love the style, love the dialogue, love the characters... everything. One of the best uses of fourth wall breaking ever filmed. John Cusack's best performance, hands down. Even Jack Black isn't annoying here. Just might have dethroned School of Rock as my favorite music-oriented Jack Black movie; it's pretty hard to beat a kick-ass cover of Marvin Gaye's classic "Let's Get It On" (all hail Sonic Death Monkey/Kathleen Turner Overdrive/Barry Jive and the Uptown Five! ). One of the most perfect romantic comedies I have ever seen and certainly among my "top five."

Sweet! If I can get my lazy butt in gear, I'll probably see it when it comes to the UK next week.

Cool! I actually like both versions, but prefer the rock version. As it is, I have some other songs just like this, where some modern rock/metal band takes a classic song and gives it their own spin. It seems gaudy, but for music, I find it really interesting (and sometimes funny).

In cases like this, I tend to reference this song. Here's the original classic:

Here's the remake:

Yeah, the remake's so loud and screamy, they totally ruined it. But, I think it's freaking hilarious that way.

Hilarious is the right word. As along as you go into it anticipating a comedy routine and not music.

If you dig music remakes as much as I do, check out Volbeat. The do some Johhny Cash and Hank Williams tunes. Old fashioned music with a very Metal kick in the balls. Really floats my boat.

High Fidelity is one of the most criminally underrated movies of all time. it's ridiculous how good it is and no one remembers or knows of it. i love it as well and it's been awhile since i've watched it. may have to pick up the blu-ray today (if i remember after work ) and enjoy again
