Why do you hate "Monsoon Wedding"? I find Mira Nair the least pretentious and actually liked Monsoon Wedding for bringing out the real mood, drama, bickering, humor etc,. in any Indian wedding. It's far from perfect though...

If you are looking for pretentious then you have Deepa Mehta! I can't wait to see the mess she makes of "Midnight Children" but that's another overrated piece of writing to begin with!

I liked Monsoon Wedding also for the new and interesting actors it bought into the limelight. And they were virtually unknown before it - Vijay Raaz, Lillette Dubey, Rajat Kapoor, Tillotama Shome, Randeep Hooda etc.
