Loved the LotR trilogy but absolutely hated this movie. Do note that I never read any book written by Tolkien and nor do I ever intend to. I learned after watching the movie that it is based on a children's book, unlike the LotR trilogy which is intended for adults. Regardless I wish the title were something like "The Hobbit: A Chidren's Movie".
I felt there wasn't anywhere near as many action scenes, and too many long filler scenes. The dwarves have no character, I forgot most of their names by the middle of the movie. The dwarven leader doesn't look like a dwarf, it's probably because he's 6'2" in real life and they didn't bother to give him a prosthetic belly or even a cgi belly. That rabbit chase scene was definitely deleted scene material, and same goes for that horribly long scene of him trying to save the porcupine. The goblin king's last line is horrendously bad. Random rock giants engaging in an unexplained fight amongst each other...The riddle scene goes on for a bit too long. Keeping away a "fierce" Orc army with flaming pinecones is... I hate this movie and the only way it'd ever find its way in my home is if the other two sequels turn out real good and I'm forced to get the trilogy, but even then I might end up ripping the first disc out and smashing it with a hammer and flushing it down the toilet. I saw this yesterday in 48fps 3D IMAX. I really enjoyed the movie a lot more than I expected to. It seemed to go by much faster than it's 2hr 46min run time. For some reason, most of the changes made from the book didn't really bother me near as much as in LotR. One thing that really stood out to me as odd was near the end when Thorin got up from the tree to confront Azog, and the music being played was the Nazgūl theme from LotR. That just seemed highly inappropriate to me.
I personally found the scene where Gandalf gives Radagast a pull from his pipe hilarious. From wiki, taken from Unfinished Tales - The Hunt for the Ring: One palpable description of the weed's effects is given by Gandalf to fellow wizard Saruman upon a meeting of the White Council: "You might find that smoke blown out cleared your mind of shadows within. Anyway, it gives patience, to listen to error without anger." As far as the HFR 3D, I thought certain scenes looked absolutely amazing, some looked a bit sped up, and some looked like a video game. Overall it was interesting, but I felt that it took me out of the story too much. The next time I go see it will be in 24fps 2D. I'm really looking forward to seeing it again, and can't wait for the next two. |

It's not like the only threat that exists is Orcs. So why wouldn't they prepare for a fight rather than waste time. |

Jackson gave the film an 'Attack of the Clones' music soundtrack hack job due to last minute deadline changes in the film. Did you not know that? It was in all the papers. ![]() Still...you would think that he would of done a better job of music cue insertion than just closing his eyes and picking one from the pickle jar. ![]() .

Enjoyed the movie but didn't find it epic. Much like The Fellowship, there is so much to develope, I don't feel for the group nor would I feel for the loss of any one character yet. I'm guessing as movies progress then finish, the group of movies as a whole will be epic. That's how I felt about LORT anyway.
One thing I didn't like, was I saw it at the AVX 3D Imax theatre and the movie seemed to be sped up to 1.2x normal speed. Hard to explain, but I heard many other complaining about it so it wasn't just me. |
