Hey guys!

Did you catch this continuity issue that Jackson missed.

[Show spoiler]When Gandalf is explaining to Bilbo how his magical elven sword glows when enemies are nearby, all of a sudden there is a commotion nearby to which Gandalf turns away from Bilbo are starts shouting warnings, and call to arms before it is found out that it is only Radagast. The wise wizard did not even bother to check out Bilbo's sword to see it was indeed glowing. Bilbo was probably confused at first wondering why Mithrandir was lying to him. LOL

I did not catch that and another thing I missed was
[Show spoiler]one of the dwarves (Bifur) has an axe embedded in his head.
I discovered that while reading the Weta Art Chronicle of the movie last night.

Loved the LotR trilogy but absolutely hated this movie. Do note that I never read any book written by Tolkien and nor do I ever intend to. I learned after watching the movie that it is based on a children's book, unlike the LotR trilogy which is intended for adults. Regardless I wish the title were something like "The Hobbit: A Chidren's Movie".

I felt there wasn't anywhere near as many action scenes, and too many long filler scenes. The dwarves have no character, I forgot most of their names by the middle of the movie.

The dwarven leader doesn't look like a dwarf, it's probably because he's 6'2" in real life and they didn't bother to give him a prosthetic belly or even a cgi belly.

That rabbit chase scene was definitely deleted scene material, and same goes for that horribly long scene of him trying to save the porcupine. The goblin king's last line is horrendously bad. Random rock giants engaging in an unexplained fight amongst each other...The riddle scene goes on for a bit too long. Keeping away a "fierce" Orc army with flaming pinecones is...

I hate this movie and the only way it'd ever find its way in my home is if the other two sequels turn out real good and I'm forced to get the trilogy, but even then I might end up ripping the first disc out and smashing it with a hammer and flushing it down the toilet.

I saw this yesterday in 48fps 3D IMAX. I really enjoyed the movie a lot more than I expected to. It seemed to go by much faster than it's 2hr 46min run time. For some reason, most of the changes made from the book didn't really bother me near as much as in LotR. One thing that really stood out to me as odd was near the end when Thorin got up from the tree to confront Azog, and the music being played was the Nazgūl theme from LotR. That just seemed highly inappropriate to me.

I personally found the scene where Gandalf gives Radagast a pull from his pipe hilarious. From wiki, taken from Unfinished Tales - The Hunt for the Ring: One palpable description of the weed's effects is given by Gandalf to fellow wizard Saruman upon a meeting of the White Council: "You might find that smoke blown out cleared your mind of shadows within. Anyway, it gives patience, to listen to error without anger."

As far as the HFR 3D, I thought certain scenes looked absolutely amazing, some looked a bit sped up, and some looked like a video game. Overall it was interesting, but I felt that it took me out of the story too much. The next time I go see it will be in 24fps 2D.

I'm really looking forward to seeing it again, and can't wait for the next two.

That's not really a continuity issue. It could have been some other kind of threat. Or even just the Wargs.

It's not like the only threat that exists is Orcs. So why wouldn't they prepare for a fight rather than waste time.

I understand your opinion here, but I still thought the delivery was pretty damn funny (and by the reaction it got, so did the majority of the audience).

Jackson gave the film an 'Attack of the Clones' music soundtrack hack job due to last minute deadline changes in the film.

Did you not know that? It was in all the papers.

Still...you would think that he would of done a better job of music cue insertion than just closing his eyes and picking one from the pickle jar.

The use of the music during the Thorin/Azog confrontation was intentional. Here's a brief hint and explanation as to why it was used...

Quote:
The music of Azog has caused something of a stir this weekend. Why does his last scene in the film include music we've previously associated with Mordor? I can't fully answer that question, but I can lead you a bit: Azog's primary theme is a descending pair of thirds (G-Eb-F-D) with a chromatic snap at the end (Eb-D-Db). Musically, Azog has a connection to Mordor's musical world from his first appearance on. His final scene is very much in line with this approach. Why this consistent connection? We shall see ...

What a load of crap. It's the Nazgul theme from Weathertop - it doesn't even kick in until Thorin steels himself for battle.

Yes I did read about that before seeing the movie, but that was the only part that really stood out to me as wrong. In the context of the movie, they begin playing it as Thorin starts walking forward in slow motion, and it almost seems like he is supposed to be one of the Nazgūl.

Well at least you approached this tidbit of information with an open mind

The above quotation is from Doug Adams who wrote the liner notes for The Hobbit soundtrack and actually has some insight behind the music and where it's going in the next two films. Here is another lengthier excerpt from him regarding this issue if you care to indulge yourself...

Quote:
That said, there are a couple of themes in The Hobbit: AUJ that have people scratching their heads. Well ok, some people are scratching their heads, some are crying bloody murder and calling for the reinstatement of the Spanish Inquisition. This puts me in a tricky spot because I inevitably feel compelled to explain these things, however I'm not always going to be allowed to tell you everything right away. I started my public work on The Lord of the Rings with the Complete Recordings. The films were out and people had heard most of the music in one form or another. It was a nice, easy way for me to break into all this because I could say anything I wanted to. I couldn't really give anything away. Sure, I held on to a few surprises, but nothing heavy. This time, I'm involved while the movies and scores are being created. There were a good number of thematic connections I couldn't even describe in the liner notes, because those connections would give away plot elements from the next two pictures. I received a lot of notes from the studio -- and you know what, they were very intelligent notes! Edits and rewrites are a part of every creative endeavor; they always have been, they always will be. I owe the people at the studio a huge debt because they trusted me to make contemplative music theory a part of a mass-marketed mega-release. That took a lot of faith! The Complete Recordings were (and are) a huge hit, but they appeal to a very specific niche market. The Hobbit: AUJ is more on the level of a pop album in terms of its wide appeal. I still can't believe they let me open up a discussion on modes, tonalities, clusters, music examples, etc. I even worked two classical music in-jokes/references into the liners ... I'm not sure if anyone has found them yet. One's pretty obvious.

Suffice it to say, the score in the film is, by and large, exactly what Shore put on the page. For the most part, this is the score I heard when I first watched/heard the film. I loved it then, and I love it now. To me, it's the perfect return to Middle-earth, every bit as carefully shaped and considered as our beloved Rings scores. I know people discovered some alternate compositions en route, but take it from someone who has dedicated huge amounts of time and energy into researching alternate music from Middle-earth: this is all just part of the process. And those 'head-scratcher' moments that I've already received several hundred emails about? Yep, they're considered, too. And they mean things. Some of those things I can't talk about yet ... meaning I'm still not allowed! Anyway, I'm extremely glad that we have some puzzling going on around here! We've been so well-informed for the past few years, it's actually pretty invigorating to have to stumble around a bit.

I read it, and he said nothing about tracking Nazgul themes over Thorin fighting Kratos...um...Azog.

Enjoyed the movie but didn't find it epic. Much like The Fellowship, there is so much to develope, I don't feel for the group nor would I feel for the loss of any one character yet. I'm guessing as movies progress then finish, the group of movies as a whole will be epic. That's how I felt about LORT anyway.

One thing I didn't like, was I saw it at the AVX 3D Imax theatre and the movie seemed to be sped up to 1.2x normal speed. Hard to explain, but I heard many other complaining about it so it wasn't just me.

I have it. It is good, but not up to level of the Art of the Lord of the Rings books. It focuses more on character and costume design than art, which was my main interest. However, it is of high quality binding and construction.
