Default PS3 Movie Picture Quality

I've just tried out a couple of Blu-Ray films for the first time (Casino Royale and Click). Both films look 'very' bad when viewed on my Hitachi 42" plasma. In contrast something like Ice Age 2 demo looks amazing. The other two films, look very 'pixelated' and is extremely obvious when paused. The only think I can compare it to is the equivalent of downloading one of the TV rips that are around 380MB for 45 mins episodes. Obviously it's not quite that bad - but you get the point .

I know there's a distinct difference between film and computer-generated material in that the film has 'grain', but to be honest my old Sony DVD player produces a far better picture.

I'm running at 1080i on the PS3 and using an HDMI cable. Is this what to expect of the Blu-Ray quality or could I be missing some configuration settings somewhere? I've looked at the Blu-Ray menu options, but oher than the HDMI and resolution, there doesn't appear to be anything else to adjust.

Any ideas?
