I'm on the fence with Fat Girl.

I really liked how it was going for most of the film and then we had probably the most random, bizarre, and unsettling ending ever.

has any one had trouble with a criterion film?

My copy of Sansho The Bailife Blu-Ray disc has subtitle issues
The subtitles are out of place and are to far to the bottom of the screen
and are cut off at times

any known issues like this

No, its not a joke.

I plan on collecting these stickers by asking people who wouldn't care otherwise, to ship me their stickers.

Ultimately this is for a new art project where I plan to include various directors' signatures on a piece of canvas.

maybe Brown Bunny?

Fat Girl is awesome, and the ending helps solidify and deepen the film in several important ways.

I like this one the best, one of my favorite silent films. If you don't mind graphic nudity and sex, In the Realm is a really emotionally powerful and compelling and important film.

all of us are actually 'identity units' that have been programmed to converse about de palma rather than fassbinder.

better world-release: world on a wire or mad mad mad mad world ?

i vote world on a wire, big time . . . favorite sci fi ever after close encounters, nah, world on a wire is my genre fav, it rocks hard

I've seen almost all of the movies in the set before, so it won't hurt me to break from chronological.

Looking forward to it, at any rate!

My Great Owl persona has been posting about Krzysztof Kieslowski movies for the past five pages or so. There's probably another version of me somewhere in Poland who is posting about Fassbinder films, though.

Actually, the ending fits perfectly with the rest of the film. To be brief , essentially
[Show spoiler] the film is about how gender and sexuality are inherently violent, and we see this played out in the ending.

I watched Truffaut's Day for Night tonight on TCM. It's a great film, probably the best movie I've seen about making movies next to 8 1/2 (which in a way is not really about making movies.) Day for Night would be great for the Criterion Collection, but alas, it's a WB film.

Although being a WB film would seem to work against it, we did get Badlands.

I started watching my way through the Hitchcock set recently, but I was moving chronologically. I took a break right before The Trouble With Harry as it's not a favorite and I needed a break.

I went back to my Mel Brooks Collection to try and finish that before I dive back into Hitch.

It has an interesting premise, sure, but I didn't find it particularly scary, and the narrative and pacing just seemed 'off' somehow. The relationships between the characters (particularly between Jacinto and Carmen) never seemed that realistic or developed to me, and I found it hard to emotionally engage with any of them. I feel like Pan's Labyrinth explored similar themes far more effectively.

Separately, I saw Wild Strawberries for the first time last night, wow, really loved it. It felt surprisingly accessible for its age, really well-written, and I like how it didn't end with a completely A Christmas Carol-like transformative happy ending, but something a bit more subtle and bittersweet. Having seen Fanny and Alexander, Cries and Whispers, Persona, and now this one thing that I think Bergman does really well is dream sequences and/or surrealism. It never seems thrown in to seem weird for the sake of it, but always has a point and isn't overplayed.

I need to re-watch the Seventh Seal, the only other one of his I've seen, as I was 18 and didn't really get it when I first watched it. But any others at the top of peoples lists that would be recommended? Autumn Sonata, Hour of the Wolf and Scenes from a Marriage sound interesting, but what of the others Criterion have released?
Summer Interlude is beautiful and thought provoking. Just a very heartfelt, intriguing film. Godard once said that it was the most beautiful film that he had ever seen.

Good point. Hopefully Criterion gets to release a least a few more WB titles. I feel like Badlands will eventually go OOP because of WB. I hope I'm wrong though. And I'm glad that I already own it.

Also, don't forget that it was a bit of wish fulfillment in that

[Show spoiler]Anais said on many occasions that she wanted her 'first time' to be with someone she didn't love. This is also probably why she was so emphatic that she wasn't raped

Sorry if you've already checked this but are you sure it's not due to overscan on your display? Never had such a thing happen on ANY blu-ray disc I own.
This link to a screenshot at DVDBeaver shows that the subs are placed quite conveniently in the frame, definitely not too low.

I really loved this film too. It's been a while since I've seen it, but I can't really argue for a better film about the filmmaking process. Day for Night is so complete.

I thought it was a very entertaining movie. I know many people don't find the story he tells about treating his Macular Pucker all that interesting, but I was hooked throughout. It was an oddly life affirming watch. I don't know how much Spalding made up, but I was quite mesmerized that This man could retain so many quotidian details. And Everything Is Going to be Fine is a much stronger film, but it is also radically different in form. Overall the two make a very nice pair.

Unrelated, but I wanted to give a shout out to Fruitvale Station. It owes alot to the realism of the Dardennes and Ramin Bahrani, and is a very worthy effort. Probably the best 2013 release I have seen thus far. It's very emotionally engaging, yet brutally honest and without an ounce of fat...well except for the dog scene and one poor movie reference (WallE was released in 2008 not 2007). It's one of the indies to see this summer.
