Interesting last paragraph from that Hollywood Reporter article:

Quote:
The next Star Trek film is untitled and unscheduled, but Paramount and Skydance are eager to continue the franchise, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016. Stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana are expected to return. Though Star Trek Into Darkness earned $451 million worldwide to date, it hasn't turned a profit yet thanks to a $190 million budget. Still, the studio was heartened by the ever-important international performance of Into Darkness, which was nearly twice as much as 2009's Star Trek's international haul.

Chu is one of the worst directors ever so far in his career. He makes Uwe Boll look like Spielberg

Damon Lindelof is way worse.

I wanted Cornish to direct.

I wish Abrams would get off of Star Wars and come back to this. It would feel like a much more complete trilogy that way.

That's not Quite how it works. Don't forget Marketing/Promotions. Those can be HUGE #'s as well.

Usually, from all I've heard or read, most movies have to make a bit Over 2.5 times it's budget to be Profitable.

Kirk and Spock are at odds, end up coming together at the end when they realize they need each other.

That would be horrible news if true. Given his credentials, it sounds like he could once again kill the franchise and undo all the enjoyment that the reboot brought with what would be a likely horrid finale to what could have been a great trilogy. I'd rather have them miss the anniversary and wait a year to let someone better, wishfully Abrams, close out.

Chu Debunked. Rupert Wyatt Almost Locked In to Direct?

Quote:
A rumor surfaced earlier today that Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) is the top candidate to direct Star Trek 3. It seemed unlikely, because Chu would have to drop out of G.I. Joe 3 to helm the sequel to Star Trek Into Darkness. Plus, our editor-in-chief Steve Weintraub noted that he’s been “hearing a different name than Jon M. Chu” for Star Trek 3.

Two developments since that posting. 1) Chu’s representatives denied that their client is up for the project. 2) A new report raised the name Steve has been hearing: Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt. More after the jump.

Chu’s reps informed the Huffington Post that “Chu has not been contacted about the project.” On its own, this could just be your standard denial for a J.J. Abrams production. Paramount is the home to both Star Trek and G.I. Joe, so they could make it happen if Chu was game. But there’s more.

A source tells Cinematallica that Wyatt is “virtually a lock at this stage in the game” to sign on to the project. This is far from an official announcement, but there is a compelling case for Wyatt’s chances since it falls in line with what Steve heard.

Wyatt has attached himself to several projects after leaving the Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel. The highest profile belonged to The Equalizer remake led by Denzel Washington. Wyatt entered early negotiations, but talks swiftly broke down. Wyatt is also attached to Birdsong, Night Film, and Agent 13, but Star Trek 3 is the type of project that jumps to the front of the queue.

In other Star Trek news, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will return to write the sequel, this time without Damon Lindelof. Abrams is in negotiations to produce. All signs point to a 2016 release to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the 1966 premiere of the Star Trek TV series.

Nay to Cornish, he deserves something better!

Rupert Wyatt seems like a decent choice.

I thought Attack the Block was fantastic. I loved the ending for some reason.

If Rupert Wyatt directs this you can almost guarantee this is gonna be the best of the Star Trek reboots. ROTPOTA was one of the best action movies of the 21st.

So does this mean no lens flares? I like J.J.'s shooting style and his use of lens flares.

Jon Chu would have been a massive step backwards. It would completely ruin any interest I had in the series. I'd be happy to see Rupert Wyatt tackle the new Star Trek.

Spielberg dropped out of American Sniper. What if he's directing this?
