Default Projector v. LCD/Plasma Question

Hey, i have been searching the market for a projector, because i am pretty sure that this is the route i want to go, but i have recently become hesitant. Every time i see a blu-ray on display at BB or CC, i am blown away, as i am currently running it through my old (2001) HDTV which looks ok, but no where in comparison to the 1080p these plasmas and LCDs that they have on display in those stores output. Is the PQ very close with 1080p projectors compared with flat screens (or even DLP's)? I want to go 100", which i think would benefit me more than a 55" or so flat screen (and at a much better price), but i am having second thoughts about the actual PQ projectors give. What is the comparison? Thank you,

[edit]- i realize there is a similar topic near this, which just got bumped as i posted this, sorry
