OP should bring along a CD that he knows very well and use it for all the auditions.

I don't know off hand any models, but brands off the top of my head that I would recommend a listen would be Monitor Audio, Paradigm, Energy, B&W, Axiom, PSB, NHT, AV123 - but there are many more great speakers companies. I believe all these I mentioned have models in the OPs price range, and think most would be better then Polk or Klipsch (though only in my opinion).

i know MONITOR and PARADIGM and B&W. I'll have to look into the others...i guess i have more homework to do
