My biggest gripe is the whole concept of the humans cheering for Godzilla after everything that happened. It really took me out of the movie.

If they had actually made Godzilla the enemy and done it like Cloverfield, it would have been scarier and more realistic. And I don't mean the found footage angle, but lots of perspective from the humans on the ground and low angles, and less military involvement, we've seen it a hundred times and it's boring. Or, it could have taken a page out of Spielberg's War of the Worlds. That movie had a good flow and structure and the attack scenes were intense.

Same. That was odd.

My only real gripe with the movie is that they apparently cut a scene where Godzilla battled the military.

Even when Godzilla was a hero in the old films, there was always at least one scene that had him deal with the military.

things that killed the movie for me

1- his roar.....why wasnt it his real roar? he sounds like the trex from jurassic park. only the very last roar at the end had a hint of it.

2-too dark.....i would have liked more daylight to actually see.

3- the tone of the fim....ok this one is just preference but the movie puts me in a nervous, scared feeling. im used to gozilla making me feel good and happy.

i think i will not be buying this movie...just like i didnt buy G98.

EDIT: But to clarify, I don't think this movie was necessarily too dark; other big-budget movies are way too dark (last few Harry Potters, for instance), but this one was mostly fine.
Watch them on a display that doesn't crush the shadow detail and has good black levels then try and say that. Basically put edge lit lcd's are just not going to cope with dark films for the most part. It doesn't necessarily mean the films are to dark, just that the display isn't good enough to display them properly.

2014 could be lower but still fresh. 1998 I haven't seen in forever so I can't comment.

I loved the movie but thought the cheering and "savior of our city" news ticker was weird and really hokey.

Godzilla '14 is fine, Godzilla '98 should be a bit higher (I quite like it).

I just did the math. In today's dollars, the 1998 movie almost matched the 2014's domestic gross. If you take away the 3D surcharge, the 1998 movie sold more tickets.

I watch on a DLP in a pitch black room and can still jus barely make out what's going on in some scenes. HP6 is the worst in this regard, I had to completely muck with the display settings the one time I watched that disc. Maybe it's my eyes going bad from all these damn movies even though I'm still in my 20s

One chip DLP's typically have poor black levels and shadow detail. Amazing motion though. Their are shoots that will appear to be blobs to you, but with a display that handles such things better it will now become clear and detailed.

1. There is no 'real' roar for Godzilla. He sounds slightly different in each era and this one is no exception. His roar for this movie is actually closer to the 1954/1984 version.

2. I thought so as well. But maybe it will be different in the sequels.

3. Okay...I think it's obvious that your idea of Godzilla only stems from the late 60s/70s films. There have been plenty of his films that were similar in tone to this one. The first movie is pretty much the most serious and dark of them all.

Can anybody confirm this is the actual slipcover for the Walmart Vudu version?

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Godzilla-Blu-ray/112027/

I'm trying to track this slipcover down.

The same way people have done it for decades before online shopping.

I've pre-ordered plenty of stuff in an actual store. VHS tapes, video games, DVDs, toys, etc.

They give you a receipt and often will call you when the product is ready to be picked up. Then just show proof of order, pay the difference (if some money up front) and take your item.
